Report: 76ers' Joel Embiid Has Torn Meniscus, 'Considering Surgery' for Knee Injury
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid "was diagnosed with a displaced flap of the meniscus in his left knee and is considering surgery," per Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic.
A displaced flap, according to Charania and Vardon, "is considered to be a type of tear of the meniscus."
"Embiid, his doctors and the 76ers are continuing to discuss whether the best course of action is to rest and rehab the injury or to undergo a procedure that would require him to miss extended time," they added.
The 76ers said Thursday that an MRI revealed Embiid suffered an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee. The team further added the Embiid would be sidelined throughout the weekend while a treatment plan was finalized.
Initial concerns regarding the 29-year-old's health arose on Jan. 27 when Embiid was a late scratch at the Denver Nuggets due to left knee soreness. He missed his team's next game at the Portland Trail Blazers but returned on Tuesday, Jan. 30 against the Golden State Warriors.
Embiid was clearly hampered by the injury, notably leaving for the locker room before the end of the first quarter. The NBA's leading scorer returned and played but still looked bothered by his left knee, finishing the game with 14 points on 5-of-18 shooting.
With just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on his left knee while diving for a loose ball.
Embiid left the game for good at that point and was later ruled out for the team's Thursday game at the Jazz.
Losing Embiid for any amount of time is obviously devastating for the 76ers. Embiid has averaged 35.3 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 5.7 APG and 1.8 BPG for a 76ers team capable of a championship run when healthy. The reigning NBA MVP has posted a 34.3 player efficiency rating, good enough for the top mark of all time, per Stat Muse.
Without Embiid, the 76ers will turn to Paul Reed at the starting 5, with Mo Bamba backing him up.
