Sooner than you think, Super Bowl LVIII will be here in all of its glory. Shortly thereafter, one of the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will be having the party of a lifetime in Las Vegas while the other embarks on an offseason full of soul-searching and a potentially endless amount of what-if questions.
It's the biggest day on the football calendar and a massive event in the wagering world, too. Let's check in on what the oddsmakers think about this matchup before laying out reasons why to consider betting for each side of this Super Bowl collision.

Bet on the Chiefs If...
2 of 3
...you think the combination of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid is unstoppable at this point on the calendar.
Since Reid gave Mahomes the keys to Kansas City's attack in 2018, the Chiefs have basically secured an annual pass to the Super Bowl. This is their fourth trip to the big game in the last five years, and two of those first three trips produced titles.
The Chiefs even have a Super Bowl win over these very same 49ers. These clubs collided in Super Bowl LIV, and while San Francisco carried a 10-point lead into the final frame, Kansas City rallied to a 21-0 edge in that fourth quarter for a 31-20 final. Mahomes threw two touchdowns in that tilt (one of them to Kelce) and rushed for another score.
Kansas City is more than this three-headed, championship-banner-raising monster, of course. The Chiefs defense can be dominant, as it was in the AFC Championship, when Kansas City held MVP favorite Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens to 10 points. Sophomore running back Isiah Pacheco and rookie receiver Rashee Rice have rapidly become electric playmakers in this offense.
And yet, if you read any expert predictions that back the Chiefs in this matchup, they'll talk about Mahomes more than anything. He's a magician with the football and well on his way to becoming an all-time great, and the bright lights tend to bring out his best.
Bet on the 49ers If...
3 of 3
...you think Brock Purdy is ready for this moment and feel the 49ers are more like the dominant team they were in the regular season than the uneven bunch they've been in the playoffs.
Purdy, as you may have heard a million times by now, was the final pick of the 2022 draft and has since become a difference-maker in San Francisco. He even appeared on his way to earning MVP honors before a four-interception meltdown against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas. Purdy has since played some up-and-down football, though he has found ways to lead his team to consecutive second-half comebacks.
As a whole, the 49ers have yet to fully click this postseason, which could be viewed as good or bad depending on one's perspective. A glass-three-quarters-full optimist could note that San Francisco is so loaded it reached the Super Bowl without even playing its best football yet. A glass-bone-dry pessimist, though, might worry the mistakes the 49ers made against the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions will be fatal flaws against the Chiefs.
Saying all of that, San Francisco probably has the best roster in the NFL, and Purdy has done a mostly exceptional job of maximizing the many playmakers around him. In the regular season alone, Christian McCaffrey eclipsed 2,000 scrimmage yards with 21 touchdowns, while Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle combined for 3,254 receiving yards and 20 touchdown catches.
Purdy doesn't have to outperform Mahomes for the 49ers to win, but San Francisco can't take a lopsided loss in the quarterback matchup either. If Purdy is efficient, his playmakers are effective and this defense can be as good as it looks on paper (and was during the regular season), San Francisco can exact some revenge while joining the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers as the league's only six-time Super Bowl champions.
