Kerr: Warriors Won't Find Better Players Than Chris Paul, GP2 amid NBA Trade Rumors
One week away from the NBA trade deadline, the Golden State Warriors are in a tricky position with an expensive roster that has failed to live up to expectations so far this season.
Appearing on 95.7 The Game's Willard and Dibbs show, head coach Steve Kerr thinks the Warriors' best chance to turn things around is by getting Chris Paul and Gary Payton II back healthy because they're "not going to find better players" than them in a trade.
The Warriors have been connected to several players leading up to the trade deadline, though it's unclear if they will be able to make any significant additions.
Per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Warriors have everyone except Stephen Curry on the table right now.
It's interesting that Kerr highlighted Paul as a player who can help them because Charania cited him as among the players Golden State's front office will take calls on.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Wednesday the Warriors have "no interest" in trading Draymond Green or Klay Thompson.
Anthony Slater of The Athletic noted Golden State's interest in Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray is "tepid" at best.
There is something to be said for the Warriors letting their own players get healthy to see if they can turn things around with this group. Green, Paul and Payton have played a combined 78 games.
Payton, who has only played two games since Nov. 30, can make an impact because of his ability to defend on the ball. Paul can run the second unit when Curry needs to rest during games.
Jonathan Kuminga is starting to play like the the Warriors hoped when they made him the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He's averaging a career-high 14.8 points per game and has scored at least 20 points in seven straight games.
It's unclear when Payton might be able to return from a strained hamstring that has plagued him all season.
Paul was cleared to begin light on-court individual workouts on Tuesday as he works his way back from a fractured hand suffered on Jan. 5 against the Detroit Pistons. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
The Warriors are 12th in the Western Conference with a 20-24 record. They are 1.5 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets, who own the final two spots in the play-in tournament right now.
