NBA Draft 2024 Changes to 2 Days; Full Schedule, Format, TV Info Revealed
The NBA draft is set to be a two-day broadcast this year following a new agreement between the NBA and NBPA.
The first round will be held June 26 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, while the second round will take place at ESPN's Seaport District studios in New York City.
Teams will have five minutes to make first-round picks and four minutes to make selections in the second round.
Under the previous format, teams had five minutes between picks in the first round and two minutes in the second. While that allowed a total of 60 picks to be made over a four-hour broadcast, it diminished the importance of the second round. Most notably, two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić was drafted during a commercial break during the second round of the 2014 draft.
The new format should also facilitate draft-day trades, which had become increasingly difficult due to the short timeframe of the second round. Recent drafts have seen picks change hands multiple times rapidly, making it difficult for teams to track down who actually owns the pick when trying to trade up.
The 2024 NBA draft class offers a bit more intrigue than in recent years, as there has yet to be a prospect who has separated himself as the clear-cut favorite to be the No. 1 pick, which is a stark contrast to last year when Victor Wembanyama was universally predicted to be the first player selected.
In his latest mock draft, B/R's Jonathan Wasserman projected French center Alexandre Sarr to go No. 1 overall to the Detroit Pistons. The NBA draft lottery will be held on May 12 in Chicago.
