Giants GM: NY Will Be 'Thorough' Evaluating 2024 NFL Draft QBs; Daniel Jones to Start

Tyler ConwayJan 30, 2024

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen says the team expects Daniel Jones to enter the 2024 season as the starting quarterback but did not rule out using a high draft pick on his replacement.

"Where we are, we're in a good spot at six, we're gonna look at every position we have needs across the board, offensively and defensively," Schoen told reporters Tuesday at the Senior Bowl. "Daniel's in the building every day working hard. The expectation is for him to be the starter when he's healthy going into camp and we're gonna be thorough with our process at every position during the draft, regardless whether it's quarterback, running back, safety, corner, whatever it is. We'll take a good player at six."

The Giants have the No. 6 pick in April's draft and could be in position to take one of the top quarterbacks on the board. USC's Caleb Williams and North Carolina's Drake Maye are near locks to be off the board, but LSU's Jayden Daniels could wind up being available.

If the Chicago Bears wind up trading out of the No. 1 pick in favor of sticking with Justin Fields, the Giants may also be a prime candidate to move up.

Jones' contract should already be written off as a sunk cost. He's been one of the NFL's worst starting quarterbacks in four of his five seasons and even his "breakout" 2022 campaign was closer to mediocre than spectacular. The four-year, $160 million contract the Giants inked Jones to was a horrible decision that backfired from the second the ink was dry.

New York can't cut Jones this offseason unless the team wants to eat $69.3 million in dead money. It makes far more sense to keep him around—even as a temporary stopgap—for the 2024 season and then move on in the spring of 2025 when the cost will be minimal in comparison.

As it stands, the Giants need to look long and hard at how they want to move forward at the quarterback position, with the knowledge Jones is almost certainly not the answer.
