Steelers' Art Rooney II on Lack of NFL Playoff Success: 'We've Had Enough of This'

Andrew PetersJan 29, 2024

Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II is ready to win in the playoffs again after the team's seven-year drought.

The last Steelers' playoff win came in 2016 when they won a wild-card and divisional-round game but lost in the AFC Championship game. Since then, Pittsburgh has failed to win a game in the playoffs and has missed the postseason three times.

Rooney said Monday there is a sense of urgency to get back in the win column, per Steelers.com's Bob Labriola.

"We've had enough of this. It's time to get some wins," Rooney said. "It's time to take these next steps. There's some urgency there, for sure."

This season, the Steelers managed to reach the postseason but dropped their wild-card matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Next year, they will look to snap their seven-year playoff drought.

The Steelers will gain some consistency in 2024 with head coach Mike Tomlin returning to the team. There was speculation that Tomlin, who will enter the final year of a three-year contract extension in 2024, would weigh other options in the 2024 season outside of Pittsburgh.

While Tomlin and the Steelers are currently in the midst of a playoff slump, the veteran coach has had a successful 17-year tenure. Since taking over in Pittsburgh in 2007, Tomlin has not posted a losing season and has reached the Super Bowl twice, winning in 2008.

He also brings a veteran status that is somewhat rare in today's NFL. Tomlin is the longest-tenured head coach and one of three active coaches to serve for more than a decade along with Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

The Steelers have plenty of questions to answer heading into the offseason, with the biggest one being the offensive coordinator. Pittsburgh fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada in November and is still searching for a replacement.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo and Gerry Dulac, the Steelers have interviewed former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith. They also planned to interview Los Angeles Rams quarterback coach Zac Robinson, but he took the job as the Falcons' offensive coordinator when Raheem Morris was hired as head coach.

Smith's tenure with the Falcons wasn't very successful, but he's proven himself as a solid offensive coordinator and could be with the Steelers' need to get back on track.
