NBA Rumors: Bruce Brown Trade Price Expected to 'Dissuade' 76ers, More at Deadline
The Toronto Raptors are reportedly seeking a first-round pick in trade talks for guard Bruce Brown, which may greatly limit his market ahead of next month's deadline.
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported the asking price may "dissuade" teams like the Philadelphia 76ers from making an offer, though the market may heat up if Toronto adjusts its expectations.
Brown is in the first season of a two-year, $45 million contract he originally signed with the Indiana Pacers in July. The deal carries a $23 million team option for 2024-25, which will almost certainly not be exercised.
Brown, who broke out during the Denver Nuggets' 2023 championship run, has come back to earth this season. He's averaging 11.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists, numbers that are actually better than his career averages but not worthy of a salary of more than $20 million.
The Pacers, who traded Brown to Toronto in a deal for Pascal Siakam, were victims of an overreaction to a playoff breakout. The short-term nature of the deal will allow teams to get out from under paying Brown next season—essentially making him an expiring contract—but the Raptors seemingly want significant compensation for a short-term rental.
Odds are Toronto won't find a buyer, or will have to settle for a draft pick that comes with significant protections. A playoff team could throw out a pick with top-20 protection that converts into a second-round pick, but the Raptors will have to wait out the market for that to happen.
As it stands, Brown is likelier to stay in Toronto than leave if the price stays the same.
