College Football Records That Are Least Likely to Fall

David KenyonDec 30, 2023

Records are made to be broke, the saying goes, but college football has several marks that might not truly be tested.

Among the historic group, a few records are traditional stats or regularly discussed topics. Most interceptions thrown in a game, career rushing yards, consecutive wins—numbers of that nature.

Most yards lost on a single play, though? Strange. And we've got it.

The following records are simply hand-picked selections that I think you should know about. They're not the only potentially unbreakable records, but they're a mix of straightforward and bizarre marks.

Longest Negative Play

1 of 7

The Record: 87 yards

Among the many situations that "Yakety Sax" could be used, no football play has ever deserved it more.

Louisiana Tech hosted Mississippi State for a nonconference game in September 2017. The matchup went predictably, as the SEC program walloped the Conference USA squad. Early in the fourth quarter, Mississippi State held an insurmountable 57-14 lead.

And then, it happened.

From the six-yard line, an errant snap sailed past J'Mar Smith. However, the Louisiana Tech quarterback failed to safely dive on the loose ball and sparked a skirmish. Three separate MSU defenders made six—maybe seven—attempts at the slippery pigskin before C.J. Morgan accidentally kicked it another 30 yards downfield.

Louisiana Tech receiver Cee Jay Powell mercifully jumped on the fumble at the seven-yard line, setting up a very traditional 3rd-and-goal with 93 yards to go.

Single-Game Interceptions

John Reaves

The Record: Nine interceptions (1969)

During the 1969 season, Florida posted a 9-1-1 record and finished the year ranked 15th in the country.

That one setback, though? Really bad.

John Reaves—who left Gainesville as the program's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns—simply had a rough outing. Florida traveled to Auburn with a 6-0 record as the nation's No. 7 team.

But the Gators endured a painful loss in which Reaves tossed nine interceptions. Auburn won 38-12.

In the modern era, it's tough to envision a quarterback not getting placed on the sideline for his own sanity after a sixth interception—let alone a seventh or eighth turnover.

Single-Game Offensive Yards

3 of 7

The Record: 1,021 yards

One of the coolest trends in the FBS record book is learning about all of the prolific Houston quarterbacks. The most accomplished one is Andre Ware, who hoisted the Heisman Trophy in 1989.

Not coincidentally, he exploded a box score in historic fashion.

Ware passed for 340 yards and five touchdowns...in the second quarter alone on Oct. 21, 1989 against SMU. He wrapped up the 95-21 demolition with 517 yards and six scores, giving way to David Klingler's 254 yards and four touchdowns in the second half. Houston added 250 rushing yards to its 771 through the air, closing the rout at 1,021 total yards.

Beyond that being a preposterous number, it won't be touched for a couple of reasons.

First, basic etiquette. At some point—winning by 40 in the fourth quarter, for example—teams stop throwing the ball and/or dig into the depths of the bench. Also, as of 2023, the clock no longer stops to move the chains for a first down except in late-half situations.

Houston's record is safe.

The Record: 77 punts (1939)

If you simply refused to believe this historical fact, I probably could not fault you in the slightest.

Back in 1939, the Texas Tech Red Raiders took on the Centenary Gentlemen in a classic November scuffle. And by classic, I mean a rain-soaked day in Shreveport, Louisiana, that led to the programs resorting to a jaw-dropping 67 combined punts on first down.

Why? Hope the other team fumbles.

The contest ended with 77 punts in a 0-0 tie; Centenary gained 31 yards on 21 snaps, and Texas Tech lost a yard on 12 plays. Tech's Charlie Calhoun set forever-standing records of 36 punts for 1,318 yards.

For comparison's sake, UCF's Mitch McCarthy punted 36 times in the entire 2023 season.

Between today's improved field conditions and an understandable refusal to even entertain not actually using three downs on offense, there's no way this record is touched. Right?

The Record: 7,125 yards

Yeah, we have to talk about official vs. unofficial records. Technically speaking, San Diego State's Donnel Pumphrey holds the mark at 6,405 yards with Ron Dayne at 6,397.

Due to NCAA rules, bowl statistics were not counted until 2002. For some bizarre reason, previous stats have not been retroactively included. As a result, Dayne's four postseason games with Wisconsin officially only matter in our minds.

But let's be serious.

Dayne rumbled to 2,109 yards on the ground as a freshman in 1996, followed by All-American seasons of 1,457 and 1,525. In his senior year, he amassed 2,034 rushing yards and won the Heisman Trophy.

As with Houston's record, updated first-down timing is the obstacle. The clock isn't as cooperative for players on run-heavy offenses today.

Longest Winning Streak

Bud Wilkinson
Bud Wilkinson

The Record: 47 wins

Only two programs have reached 40 victories in a row: Washington way back in 1908-14 and Oklahoma from 1953-57.

That alone is reason to believe the record is safe. The rise of the superconference and the impending expansion of the College Football Playoff, however, basically confirms that OU's mark of 47 straight will not be broken.

What a run it was, though. Bud Wilkinson built a juggernaut in Norman and posted a 145-29-4 record in 17 seasons.

To start this incredible five-year window, OU won nine consecutive games in 1953. Then the Sooners went undefeated in 31 games over the next three seasons and opened the 1957 campaign with a 7-0 record. They claimed national championships in 1955 and 1956.

Miami's dynasty in the early 2000s managed 34 before Florida State, Clemson and Georgia each hit 29 in the last decade.

Good luck clawing to 47.

Margin of Victory

7 of 7

The Record: 222 points (1916)

If you know a little bit of college football history, you likely suspected this one would make the cut.

And, no, that's not a misprint.

Georgia Tech showed absolutely no mercy in a 222-0 humiliation of Cumberland College, which had disbanded its program one year earlier and essentially fielded a team of fraternity brothers for the game.

The prevailing thought is Georgia Tech coach John Heisman threatened legal action if Cumberland didn't play, because he wanted revenge for a 22-0 loss to the school in baseball during the spring. (Heisman also coached the Georgia Tech baseball team.)

Well, he managed some very unsportsmanlike redemption.

Georgia Tech, unofficially, gained 922 yards and held Cumberland to minus-28 yards in the iconic victory.
