College Football Bowl Picks 2023-24: Odds and Predictions for Every Game

Joe TanseyDec 23, 2023

Every bowl games comes with its own unique motivation for the participating teams.

Saturday's Hawai'i Bowl features a situation you do not see often with the San Jose State Spartans.

SJSU quarterback Chevan Cordeiro will play his final college football game in the stadium where it all began in front of numerous friends and family.

Cordeiro transferred to SJSU from Hawai'i two years ago, and on Saturday he gets a chance to shine in his home state one final time.

The Spartans out of the Mountain West are a heavy favorite over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers because the Sun Belt side will be without their starting quarterback Grayson McCall, who is off to the NC State Wolfpack.

The Arizona Wildcats carry a similar advantage in Thursday's Alamo Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners, who lost Dillon Gabriel in the transfer portal to the Oregon Ducks.

San Jose State carries all sorts of advantages into the Hawai'i Bowl.

It holds an edge at quarterback with Cordeiro, who started his career in 2018, going up against Coastal backup Ethan Vasko.

Cordeiro holds an emotional edge over every other player on both rosters because he will complete his collegiate career in front of a home crowd in Honolulu.

San Jose State was also the better team in the second half of the season than Coastal Carolina.

The Spartans won their final six games after a 1-5 start. Five of those six victories were by double digits, which is important for the 9.5-point spread applied to the Hawai'i Bowl.

San Jose State scored at least 35 points in five of its last six victories and held all but one opponent to 24 points or fewer. The Spartans are a well-oiled machine right now, while Coastal is trying to patch an offense together with McCall off to NC State.

Vasko did start three games at the end of the regular season, but in his toughest matchup against the James Madison Dukes, he was outplayed in a 56-14 loss.

The Chanticleers have been more inconsistent this season than they have been in the past few years, and they are running into a buzzsaw of emotion and tremendous form in their matchup with San Jose State.

No. 14 Arizona (-3) vs. No. 12 Oklahoma

Arizona enters the Alamo Bowl in far better shape to win compared to Oklahoma.

The Wildcats finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak with three wins over Top 25 opponents.

They also have a larger complement of stars available for the Pac-12-Big 12 matchup in San Antonio.

Gabriel is by far Oklahoma's biggest loss, but it also lost three running backs and star offensive lineman Cayden Green to the portal.

Additionally, the Sooners lost offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who took the head coaching gig with the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Arizona could potentially have an opt-out or two announced before kickoff, but even if that happens, it is far less depleted than Oklahoma on offense.

The Sooners may not have a ton of motivation to compete, while Arizona could use a bowl win as a springboard into next year.

Ten-win seasons do not happen often in Tuscon, and if it can hit that mark with an Alamo Bowl win over a premier program, it would be viewed as a massive success for Jedd Fisch and his staff.
