AEW Collision Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From Dec. 2

Doc-Chris MuellerDec 2, 2023

Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of AEW Collision on December 2.

The Continental Classic tournament continued with three more matches from the blue bracket this week.

Two members of The Blackpool Combat Club were in action in separate matches. Claudio Castagnoli took on Brody King, and Bryan Danielson faced the man with the most to lose in this tournament, Eddie Kingston.

We also saw Daniel Garcia go up against Andrade El Idolo and some more buildup for the Worlds End pay-per-view on December 30.

Let's take a look at what went down during Saturday's show.

Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brody King

Collision.

After the usual array of pre-show promos from the competitors in some of the matches, King made his way to the ring for the first match of the night against Castagnoli.

These are two very different kinds of powerhouses. Castagnoli is like an expensive luxury car while King is like a monster truck. They are each great at different things.

This was a hard-hitting fight from the moment the bell rang. They weren't going for holds and reversals. The majority of this fight was made up of various strikes.

Both men left everything in the ring to deliver a physical performance that neither competitor would soon forget. The more punishment they dished out, the harder it was to predict who would get the W.

King was able to score the win to become the first star in the blue league to up his score to six points. This was pure fun from start to finish.

Result: Brody King defeated Claudio Castagnoli

Grade: A-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • King had a cast on his hand but it didn't stop him from using that arm to hit strikes.
  • King ripped off the padding on top of the barricade so it would hurt more when he threw Castagnoli into it.
  • King hit a body slam that was somehow both ugly and awesome at the same time.
  • Castagnoli flying in from off-screen to hit a huge uppercut in the corner was the best moment of the match.

Kiera Hogan vs. Abadon

Collision.

After recently making her first televised appearance in many months, Abadon was back in action to take on Kiera Hogan.

Abadon was trying to intimidate Hogan with their strange behavior, but the former Baddie quickly gained her composure and started dishing out offense.

You could tell they didn't have a lot of experience working together. Their vastly different styles led to a couple of awkward moments, but most of what we got here was decent.

Abadon used a unique version of a DDT to pick up the win. The lights went out after the match and when they came back on, Julia Hart was in the ring. She disappeared again, but this was clearly done to set up a possible feud or alliance. Time will tell.

Result: Abadon defeated Kiera Hogan

Grade: C

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Abadon's whole aesthetic is great. It would be a great Halloween costume or cosplay for a fan to attempt.
  • Hogan has done some good work in ROH recently. Anyone who wants to see more from her should check it out.
  • Abadon's finisher rules.

Daniel Garcia vs. Andrade El Idolo

3 of 7
Collision.
Collision.

Garcia and El Idolo were both looking to get on the board in the blue league in this bout. Garcia was already beaten once by Castagnoli, but this was the first bout for El Idolo in this tournament.

Unlike King vs. Castagnoli, this fight started off with a standard exchange of holds and counters. These men both pride themselves on being great technicians, so they were trying to outwrestle each other instead of just throwing punches.

The former leader of LFI might have had a big power advantage but he found himself on defense after Red Death started working on his leg.

They traded the upper hand multiple times throughout the match but it felt like Garcia was the one controlling the pace. This was just as good as the opening bout but for completely different reasons. This was still a physical fight, but it was much more technical.

Garcia did his best but El Idolo was just a little too much for him this week. He picked up the win to put his score up to six points. They showed each other respect by shaking hands once it was over.

Result: Andrade El Idolo

Grade: A-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Roderick Strong and Samoa Joe had a funny interaction backstage before this match.
  • Daddy Magic calling the cameraman a pervert and telling him not to get too close was hilarious.
  • Having matches with no interference on a regular basis has highlighted that AEW uses interference a little too much in most situations. This tournament has been a breath of fresh air.

Iron Savages vs. Kingdom, House of Black vs. Daniels and Sydal

4 of 7
Collision.
Collision.

Roddy accompanied Matt Taven and Mike Bennett to the ring for a match against The Iron Savages.

Even though the two big powerhouses got in some early offense, this ended up being a relatively quick victory for The Kingdom. It wasn't a squash, but it was close.

Even with the short length, the action we got was all good. The Iron Savages have been underrated for a long time so it was nice to see them get more screen time.

Result: The Kingdom defeated The Iron Savages

Grade: C

We immediately got another tag team match with Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal taking on Malakai Black and Buddy Matthews.

Sydal and Mattews started the bout with a great exchange of takedowns and counters. Once it was time for Black and Daniels to tag in, HOB became more aggressive.

They fought through the break and into the next segment. Sydal got a hot tag and hit a series of fast-paced moves, but it was too little too late. Daniels took a stomp from Matthews and Black Mass from Malakai to give HOB the win.

FTR confronted HOB after the match. Black tried to recruit them to the House, but FTR didn't look interested. Black and Matthews jumped them and pointed out how nobody came to save FTR.

Result: House of Black defeated Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal

Grade: B-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • The clip of Roddy screaming the word ass at the top of his lungs is going to circulate a lot on social media.
  • Boulder has no right to have a moonsault that looks that good.
  • The way Matthews countered Sydal's sunset flip was great.
  • Black backflipping out of a powerbomb is a hell of a counter.

Kip Sabian vs. Vikingo

5 of 7
Vikingo.
Vikingo.

Kip Sabian and Vikingo met for a somewhat impromptu match. The AAA mega champion is a lauded high-flyer, but Sabian is an agile competitor in his own right, so this was a fast-paced bout with a few high spots sprinkled in to pop the crowd.

This was more of a filler match than anything else, but it was entertaining filler, so it served its purpose and gave the fans in attendance some fun moments. Vikingo is basically a human highlight reel.

Sabian came close to getting the win a few times, but the luchador had his number and hit a 630 to earn a victory. He offered Sabian his hand but his show of sportsmanship was rejected.

Result: Vikingo defeated Kip Sabian

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Toni Storm and Skye Blue gave individual promos backstage. Storm seemed upset that Renee Paquette was interviewing her instead of RJ City.
  • A phoenix splash from the other side of the ropes is nuts.

Bryan Danielson vs. Eddie Kingston

6 of 7
Collision.
Collision.

The main event of this week's show was the CC tourney match between Danielson and Kingston.

Both of these men are skilled strikers, but Kingston's size gave him an edge whenever they traded shots, so The American Dragon also tried to rely on his technical ability to outwrestle the ROH world and NJPW Strong champion.

Each of the three Continental Classic matches we saw on this show felt completely different, but all of them were equally entertaining. Castagnoli vs. King was a slugfest, Garcia vs. El Idolo was a more technical encounter, and this one fell somewhere in the middle.

Kingston has already lost once in this tournament, so there was a sense of desperation in his performance. On the other hand, Danielson was trying to keep his eye safe while dishing out as much damage as possible.

Kingston started focusing on Danielson's injured orbital bone during the second half, but The American Dragon kept himself in the fight and hit his running knee for the win.

Result: Bryan Danielson defeated Eddie Kingston

Grade: A-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Danielson went to the eye patch store and said "Give me the biggest one you have!"
  • Kingston flooring Danielson with a stiff chop was great.
  • Nigel McGuinness yelling out tips to Kingston was hilarious. His pettiness is unmatched.
  • Some of the chops they were hitting literally had an echo.

The Final Word

7 of 7
Julia Hart.
Julia Hart.

From an in-ring standpoint, this might have been one of the top three episodes of Collision since the show debuted.

Not only did we get three outstanding matches in the Continental Classic tournament, but we also got some storyline progression in a few different feuds.

Timeless Toni continues to capitalize on every second of TV time, Abadon is finally getting a chance to shine and might be about to enter a storyline with Hart, FTR and HOB are heading for a big fight, and Miro and his wife finally had a chance to talk for a moment.

Even though this show had some filler, everyone did a great job making sure there were no weak segments.
