3 Takeaways from Giants' Week 12 Win vs. Patriots

Joe TanseyNov 27, 2023

The New York Giants showcased more promise in the last two weeks than they did in the first 10 games of the 2023 NFL season.

Tommy DeVito picked up his second straight as the Giants starting quarterback thanks to Jalin Hyatt's breakout day.

The rookie wide receiver eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time in his career and allowed the Giants to exploit the New England Patriots defense with some big plays.

The New York defense looked as tenacious as it has all season, as it forced the two New England quarterbacks into three interceptions and earned a fumble recovery.

The Giants franchise is not completely fixed after back-to-back wins over the Washington Commanders and Patriots, but they at least provided fans with some excitement going into the Week 13 bye.

Jalin Hyatt's Breakout Game

The Giants finally took advantage of Hyatt's skill set.

The rookie out of Tennessee recorded the first 100-yard performance by a Giants wide receiver in 2023.

Hyatt averaged 21.6 yards per catch and had a long gain of 40 yards, two statistics Giants fans never thought they would see after the futility at the position over the last few seasons.

Hyatt's two longest gains of 41 and 29 yards did not help the Giants add more points to the scoreboard since those two series ended in a fumble and a punt.

However, Hyatt did have a key 12-yard reception on the lone touchdown drive that ended in a 12-yard pass play to Isaiah Hodgins.

Hyatt's performance gave the Giants something to build on for their final five games, and if performs well in that stretch, they will know they have a piece to build around at wide receiver.

Tommy DeVito Showed Progress For Second Straight Week

DeVito set an incredibly low bar for progress to be shown after he struggled mightily in the 49-17 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys.

DeVito deserves credit for turning things around in the passing game so quickly instead of being mired in awfulness for the rest of the season.

The rookie quarterback completed at 68 percent of his passes for the second straight week, threw for 191 yards and a touchdown. His only blemish was a fumble in the first quarter.

DeVito did not have better numbers than the Week 11 win over Washington, but he proved that he can string two solid performances together.

That is all the Giants can ask for after they hit rock bottom in the loss to the Cowboys.

Defense Made Life Miserable For Both Patriots Quarterbacks

The Giants defense produced another stellar performance on Sunday.

They limited Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe to 139 passing yards and picked off the New England quarterbacks on three occasions.

Two of the three turnovers set up scoring drives by the offense. The first of those two instances occurred late in the first half.

New England brought the ball down to the Giants' 23-yard-line before Bobby Okereke picked off Jones and returned the pass deep into Patriots territory.

The Giants scored their lone touchdown off that interception and they got their field goal after Xavier McKinney's second-half interception.

The timely picks and stops throughout the game halted the small bit of momentum that the Patriots had and allowed DeVito to make a few key throws to pick up the victory.

That is the formula the Giants will have to use win their final five games. starting with the Week 14 home contest with the Green Bay Packers.
