3 Takeaways from 49ers' Week 11 Win vs. Bucs

Kristopher KnoxNov 20, 2023

Though they didn't dominate as they did against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10, the San Francisco 49ers picked up another convincing win on Sunday.

in Week 11, San Francisco welcomed Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Tampa did enough to keep things interesting at times, the 49ers left with a 27-13 victory and a 7-3 record.

Christian McCaffrey found the end zone again after missing out on a touchdown in Week 10. The 49ers defense played at a postseason level, and quarterback Brock Purdy was nearly perfect as the 49ers picked up their second consecutive win following the Week 9 bye.

Here are our biggest takeaways from San Francisco's Week 11 win over the Buccaneers.

Brock Purdy Earns a Place in NFL History

The return of Deebo Samuel (shoulder) and the bye week had a positive effect on Purdy last week—he finished 19-of-26 for 296 yards and three touchdowns against the Jaguars. Sunday showed that Purdy's Week 11 performance was only a sign of things to come.

Against the Buccaneers, Purdy went 21-of-25 for 333 yards, three touchdowns and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. That last accomplishment earned the 23-year-old a piece of NFL history.

"Brock Purdy just became the first 49er with a perfect QB rating in a full game since Joe Montana and Steve Young each did it back in 1989," ESPN's Field Yates posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This makes back-to-back great games for Purdy, who was in a slump during San Francisco's three-game skid before the bye. While it's worth noting that Tampa's secondary has struggled—it came in ranked 31st in passing yards allowed—that shouldn't detract from Purdy's accomplishment.

With Purdy playing as he did on Sunday, San Francisco is going to be a major threat in the postseason—and the quarterback might just be sneaking back into the MVP conversation.

The Defense Made the Big Plays When Needed

While Purdy had a near-perfect game, it wasn't a flawless contest by the 49ers. They only took a 13-7 lead into halftime, and there were several points where it felt like the Bucs might gain the momentum.

However, the 49ers defense was there more often than not to turn the tide.

With the Buccaneers threatening to score early in the second quarter, Fred Warner and Nick Bosa sacked Mayfield at the 49ers' 34-yard line, and Warner recovered Mayfeild's fumble. San Francisco got a field goal on the ensuing drive. Late in the fourth-quarter, Ji'Ayir picked off Mayfield in the red zone to keep more Buccaneers points off the board.

In all, the 49ers limited Tampa to 287 yards. They forced two turnovers and sacked Mayfield four times. It was the second straight solid defensive performance after the bye and after coordinator Steve Wilks' move from the coach's box to the sideline.

It's been another positive development because the defense, like Purdy, had its fair share of issues leading up to the bye.

San Francisco Has Built Momentum at a Critical Time

Purdy, McCaffrey and the defense weren't the only high-level performers on Sunday. Brandon Aiyuk scored on a 70-yard strike and finished with 156 yards on five receptions. George Kittle had 89 receiving yards and a score, while Deebo Samuel chipped in 63 receiving yards.

While it would be nice to see San Francisco convert more red-zone trips into touchdowns—it went 2-of-4 on Sunday—head coach Kyle Shanahan has his overall offense clicking again. That, combined with the recent defensive resurgence, gives the 49ers a ton of momentum, and it couldn't come at a better time.

San Francisco faces a critical stretch that could make or break its bid for home-field advantage in the playoffs. Over the next three weeks, the 49ers have two games with the rival Seattle Seahawks sandwiched around a trip to visit the Philadelphia Eagles.

While the 6-4 Seahawks fell to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, they're only a game behind the 49ers in the divisional race. The Eagles, who face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, remain in control of the NFC's No. 1 seed.

So, while the Buccaneers might not represent a postseason-caliber test for the 49ers, San Francisco must carry any confidence gained in Sunday's win into Week 12.
