Packers' Win-Loss Predictions for 2023 NFL Season

Alex BallentineAug 23, 2023

The Green Bay Packers 2023 campaign is going to go a long way in shaping the confidence (or lack thereof) in the team moving forward.

After an 8-9 season in which they missed the playoffs, the Packers are moving into a new era. Trading away Aaron Rodgers officially hands the reins over to Jordan Love who will attempt to keep the Packers' impressive quarterback lineage going.

A new era brings new expectations. While the Packers have gone into every season over the last three years as a Super Bowl contender, the bar is a little lower this season.

Getting back to the playoffs would be considered a strong season and a positive sign that things are going in the right direction.

Here, we'll take a look at the schedule, overall questions facing the franchise and, ultimately, give a prediction for how the season is going to end up.

Oddsmakers are taking a cautious approach to the Packers. With a win total of 7.5 at DraftKings Sportsbook, they are essentially asking bettors to decide whether the team will be better or worse than last season.

It's not an easy question to answer.

There's the obvious aspect of quarterback play to figure out. Love has big shoes to fill at quarterback, but he doesn't have to be better than the MVP version of Rodgers. He just has to outperform the version of Rodgers that was 26th in total QBR last season.

On defense, it's a matter of better health and a revamped defensive line. Rashan Gary and Eric Stokes each played just nine games last season, giving the Packers two major injuries at key positions.

They also said goodbye to Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed this offseason. The two interior defenders played a majority of the snaps alongside Kenny Clark.

The Packers didn't do a whole lot to replace them. They'll be depending on Devonte Wyatt, T.J. Slaton and rookie Karl Brooks to step into larger roles this season.

Matt LaFleur's club came in at No. 24 in our power rankings heading into training camp.

Predictions

Rashan Gary has to be a defensive leader in 2023.
Rashan Gary has to be a defensive leader in 2023.

The good news for the Packers in terms of their schedule is that their most difficult stretch comes at an ideal time. That would be from Weeks 10-14 when they have road games against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions and New York Giants with home games against the Chargers and Chiefs between each of them.

The Steelers, Lions and Giants figure to be fringe playoff teams based on their results last season and what they've done. Matchups against Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes between them figure to make things difficult for the defense.

The timing of that stretch should give the Packers some margin of error at the beginning of the season to get things in order with Love at quarterback. There's also enough time to end the year on a strong note if things don't go well in those five games.

Ultimately, there are going to be some bumps in the road this season. Aaron Rodgers' first season at the helm saw the Packers go 6-10 before figuring things out and once again becoming an annual threat with the quarterback.

Pass-rush depth concerns and a young receiving corps paired with an inexperienced quarterback will make it hard to find consistency every week.

Prediction: 7-10
