Projecting Heel and Face Turns at WWE Night of Champions and AEW Double or Nothing
WWE and All Elite Wrestling continue to deliver major events throughout the year. This weekend, both Night of Champions and Double or Nothing should be big shows for their respective companies.
In order to continue the momentum of both wrestling promotions, these shows cannot just be good. They must build excitement for fans to keep watching.
WWE and AEW pay-per-views are moments in time that often set up surprise debuts and shocking turns.
The multiple main event-worthy matches on these shows will only deliver more with big heel or face turns.
Jey Uso and/or Jimmy Uso could finally have had enough of Roman Reigns, while "Jungle Boy" Jack Perry or Sammy Guevara may show their true colors in the Four Pillars main event.
This is just a hint of the most likely heel and face turns to come from Night of Champions and Double or Nothing.
Face: The Usos
1 of 6The end of The Bloodline is rapidly approaching. When The Usos decide to take business into their own hands, Roman Reigns will face a threat he cannot contain.
The honeymoon period has long passed for Jimmy and Jey Uso. They have both faced the abusive wrath of The Tribal Chief, who has now decided he and Solo Sikoa can be a better tag team than The Usos.
The ultimate goal should be Reigns and Sikoa vs. The Usos, and that build can truly start if Jimmy and Jey cost The Tribal Chief and their younger brother the WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championship in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens may be able to defeat Reigns and Sikoa on their own, but WWE will want to protect both challengers.
Jey and Jimmy provide a convenient wild card to protect them and keep the titles on the fighting champions.
Heel: AJ Styles (and The OC)
2 of 6Seth Rollins is the most popular Superstar in WWE right now. Anyone fighting him will likely be booed, and this could be a perfect opportunity to turn AJ Styles on SmackDown.
With The O.C. behind him, The Phenomenal One is not going to remain a fan favorite forever. He will take shortcuts. Why wait when the stakes could not be higher?
If Styles is going to pull off a shocking upset, he needs to make a major statement. His O.C. teammates can help establish that statement.
This will also allow Mia Yim to build momentum toward challenging Bianca Belair for the Raw Women's Championship and might even revitalize the forgotten Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.
Face: Mustafa Ali
3 of 6Mustafa Ali is barely a heel at this point despite his aggravating "Positiv-Ali" gimmick. He has taunted everyone in his path to get to this point, but he walks into his match with Gunther as the ultimate underdog.
No PPV match in 2023 has had a more obvious outcome than The Ring General beating Ali. But that could be the perfect setup to rebuild the aura of the once-hyped cruiserweight as the ultimate underdog.
The world of 205 Live may be long gone, but Ali's work in that brand was good enough to lead him to world title contention. His untimely injury ahead of Elimination Chamber in 2019 may have cost him the push of his career.
At this point, the 37-year-old has never won WWE gold, but fans could yet accept him as a champion. It will all matter how he is treated in this match.
The Saudi Arabia crowd will accept a heroic underdog return from Ali at Night of Champions if WWE is ready to commit to an underused talent again.
Heel: 'Jungle Boy' Jack Perry and/or Face: Sammy Guevara
4 of 6The Four Pillars match at Double or Nothing is the most anticipated Fatal 4-Way match in AEW history. Everyone is curious how the promotion's four young standout stars will make their mark in the main event.
MJF is the centerpiece heel, and everyone else is revolving around him. While Darby Allin is set as the proud stalwart face, Sammy Guevara and "Jungle Boy" Jack Perry remain less defined.
The Spanish God started working with MJF on the road to Double or Nothing, but he began to realize his own value was more important than appeasing the AEW world champion.
The character of Jungle Boy has been questioned by everyone in this match, showing a side of Perry that fans have not seen. MJF even reached out to him to question if they could work together.
One or both men could change sides by the end of Sunday's match. It's more likely Perry will turn heel, just because fans may not be willing to accept a babyface Guevara any time soon.
Heel: Konosuke Takeshita
5 of 6The battle of The Elite vs. Blackpool Combat Club continues to evolve. "Hangman" Adam Page has reunited with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks, but Don Callis turned on The Cleaner to help Bryan Danielson and his crew.
Danielson, Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta have a common bond that will not break, and there is no low to which they will stoop in order to win.
While The Cowboy, The Cleaner, Matt and Nick Jackson may have their differences, they are true friends. With a common enemy, they will fight through all adversity.
Callis remains the true wild card, especially given the pupil he has fostered in Konosuke Takeshita, who has shown respect to everyone in the Anarchy in the Arena match.
When push comes to shove, though, he may choose to help the BCC and turn heel for the first time in his AEW career.
Heel: Shawn Spears
6 of 6Bullet Club Gold is not much of a stable at this point, with only Jay White and Juice Robinson as members. Double or Nothing is the perfect opportunity to add reinforcements.
The only two men in AEW who have been connected to White or Robinson so far are Ricky Starks and Shawn Spears. While the former is clearly focused on dismantling the group, the latter has not made his position as clear.
He did help Starks at first but has not appeared since. The Perfection has often been better as a heel rather than a face, and he can quickly fit in with White and Robinson.
It's also possible someone new from New Japan Pro-Wrestling will arrive to help Bullet Club Gold, but Spears is the most obvious name at this time to help Switchblade rise up the ranks in AEW quickly.
