Predicting Dolphins' Breakout Players at 2023 OTAs, Minicamp

Jake RillMay 22, 2023

In 2022, the Miami Dolphins reached the NFL playoffs for the first time in six years. This year, they'll aim to continue making progress by not only getting back there but also by winning their first postseason game since the 2000 campaign.

Miami's quest to do so begins soon. The team is hosting OTA offseason workouts on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, followed by more from May 30-31 and on June 2. A mandatory minicamp will be held from June 6-8.

The Dolphins have stars on both sides of the ball. But if they hope to perform even better during the upcoming season, they'll need other players to step up and fill key roles.

Here's a look at several Miami players who could start breakout seasons with strong showings at those upcoming offseason activities.

Braxton Berrios, WR

Braxton Berrios has spent four years in the NFL. However, the wide receiver has never played for a team other than the New York Jets, which never had consistent quarterback play during his time with the franchise.

So, the 27-year-old may not have yet reached his full potential yet.

Now, Berrios will be suiting up for another AFC East team. He signed with the Dolphins this offseason, and he could have a breakout now that he'll be catching passes from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in Miami.

It's a sure thing that Berrios will be handling return duties for the Dolphins, and he should thrive in that role. But he could also emerge as a weapon on offense, as the team could use a solid No. 3 option alongside Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

The Miami product has only five career receiving touchdowns and has never recorded more than 431 receiving yards in a season. But those numbers could go up now that he'll be playing in a more high-powered offense.

Channing Tindall, LB

Channing Tindall didn't get on the field much during his 2022 rookie season. Although he played in 16 games for the Dolphins, he recorded only three tackles. And the majority of his snaps came on special teams.

But the 23-year-old, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, could have a larger role heading into his sophomore campaign. Miami head coach Mike McDaniel said as much earlier in the offseason.

"I think he did a great job with the reps that he had, and the scout team, during the year for practice. He did develop," McDaniel told reporters in March. "But we're excited about this next year opportunity to really take advantage of some opportunities he will have."

During his college career at Georgia, Tindall showed a lot of potential. He could get greater chances to live up to that with the Dolphins now that he has some NFL experience under his belt.

Kader Kohou, CB

Any secondary that has Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard among its starting cornerbacks is likely to be successful. The Dolphins not only have those two stars but also another young CB who could be on the verge of a breakout heading into 2023.

Kader Kohou came out of nowhere to become an impact defender for Miami last season. After signing as an undrafted free agent, he went on to play 15 games and make 13 starts, recording 72 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble in his rookie campaign.

It's possible the 24-year-old will get tested even more now that the Dolphins have added Ramsey, but it will just give Kohou a chance to further prove himself and potentially impress even more.

The Texas A&M-Commerce product may be the clear No. 3 cornerback on Miami's defense, but he's a solid player capable of filling that role well. And by the time the 2023 season is over, he may have cemented his spot in this secondary even further.
