Preakness 2023: Projected Prize Money Earnings, Order of Finish and More
The Saturday of the Preakness Stakes has arrived, with the 148th running of the illustrious race again set to take place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Seven horses will battle it out in the middle leg of the three-race Triple Crown season.
All eyes will be on Mage, the Kentucky Derby winner vying to become the 14th Triple Crown champion in horse racing history. If he can win Saturday's Preakness, he'll head to the Belmont Stakes (set for June 10) with an opportunity to go 3-for-3.
Six other horses will try to deny Mage of a bid for history. None of those competitors were participants in the Kentucky Derby.

Mage wasn't among the top favorites to win the Kentucky Derby. He had 14-1 odds to win the race, yet still emerged victorious. It was only his second win in four career races.
Things are much different heading into the Preakness. Mage is the clear favorite, and there aren't nearly as many formidable challengers. Quite a few of the horses in Saturday's field are longshots to win.
Anything can happen, though. And with only seven horses in the field, any could capture the victory at Pimlico.
But Mage should be in the mix to win late. He hasn't been great at getting off to strong starts, but he's proven to be capable of navigating his way through a field. That's what he did at the Kentucky Derby, where he overtook Two Phil's on the final stretch.
It shouldn't take quite as long for Mage to get to the front this time, though, with fewer horses to pass. He also has a solid starting position in the No. 3 post.
"Every time he races, he's getting more mature," assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. said, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press. "Last race, he didn't look like an apprentice to anybody."
Earlier this week, First Mission looked to be the biggest threat to beat Mage. However, that's no longer the case. First Mission was scratched from the lineup due to a left hind issue, so he won't be racing the Preakness.
Instead, National Treasure is the horse most likely to beat Mage on Saturday. He's a Bob Baffert-trained colt that hasn't quite yet lived up to his potential, having won only one of his previous five races.
The prediction here is that the finish will come down to National Treasure and Mage, who will have the lead going into the final turn. He won't stay there, though, as National Treasure will overtake him and then hold on for the biggest victory of his career.
Predicted Order of Finish: 1. National Treasure; 2. Mage; 3. Red Route One; 4. Coffeewithchris; 5. Perform; 6. Blazing Sevens; 7. Chase the Chaos.
