Preakness 2023 Lineup: Final Field Odds and Predictions for All Entries

Jake RillMay 20, 2023

Seven horses will head to the gates for the 2023 Preakness Stakes on Saturday evening. Only one will emerge as the champion at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. And only one of the participants is in the running for a Triple Crown.

Mage, who won the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, will look to keep his Triple Crown quest alive with a Preakness victory. If he's successful, he'll have a chance to become the 14th horse to win a Triple Crown at next month's Belmont Stakes.

None of the other six horses racing the Preakness were Kentucky Derby participants. So Mage is taking on a fresh field of competitors.

Preview, Predictions

The Preakness field lost a horse on Friday, when First Mission was scratched due to a left hind issue. He had been slated to start in the No. 8 post, and he had the second-best odds to win earlier this week, behind only Mage.

With First Mission no longer in the race, Mage's odds have improved. But it still isn't a guarantee that he'll win this year's Preakness, which has its smallest field since 1986.

The best horse that has a chance to upset Mage is National Treasure, the Bob Baffert-trained colt who will be starting from the No. 1 post.

National Treasure has only one career win, and that came in his first race. He's finished between second and fourth in each of his past four events.

But Baffert's horses always tend to fare well at Triple Crown events. Hence why the longtime trainer has seven previous Preakness victories, tied for the most in the race's long history.

On Saturday, National Treasure could help Baffert make history. And even though the colt hasn't had a ton of past success, he has a lot of potential.

"The talent is there. We just haven't seen it in full yet," Baffert said, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.

There's a good chance that National Treasure and Mage will be the two horses battling for the win Saturday. Mage doesn't typically storm out to a strong start, but he's capable of making moves to the lead, as he showed during the final stretch of the Kentucky Derby.

Mage may get to the lead a bit earlier in the Preakness, with not as many horses around him and with less formidable competitors. And he could be out front going into the final turn.

However, Mage may not hold on. National Treasure could fulfill his potential by storming down the final stretch, passing Mage and notching the biggest victory of his career.

While anything could happen with National Treasure and Mage battling it out late at Pimlico, don't be surprised if Mage is denied of his Triple Crown bid and National Treasure ends up on top.

Predicted Order of Finish: 1. National Treasure; 2. Mage; 3. Red Route One; 4. Coffeewithchris; 5. Perform; 6. Blazing Sevens; 7. Chase the Chaos.
