What to Watch For

This year's show will feature a breed competing for the first time in the Bracco Italiano. According to the American Kennel Club, the dog is, "of strong and harmonious construction, powerful appearance" and "the Bracco is tough and adapted to all types of hunting, reliable, docile, and easy to train."

How that breed fares against its competitors, in a competition that is anything but a cutesy display of man's best friend, remains to be seen. The judges grade dogs on distinct and definitive criteria and the slightest element of performance, be it in appearance or temperament, is the difference between placing and winning the coveted Best of Show.

Winston, a French bulldog partly owned by Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Morgan Fox, is one of the several competitors to keep an eye on.

He finished second a year ago to Trumpet and followed that narrow defeat up with a win in the National Dog Show last November. He has momentum on his side and, more importantly, growing recognition of that particular breed being a favorite of the rich and famous, as the AP pointed out.

The Wire Fox Terrier has the most wins (15) in show history, so it can never truly be counted out of the running for the biggest victory of the dog show year.
