Could Tito Ortiz Be Reunited with the UFC?

Jessy MorrisJan 3, 2009

Yes, you heard correct: "The Hungtington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz could very well return to the UFC. The 33-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champion, who has been confirmed to be a part of the Affliction broadcast team in the next PPV, could return to the organization in which he was so successful.

Some of the new fans in MMA may have heard about Ortiz but never saw him fight. Ortiz began his MMA career in 1997 at UFC 13 against Wes Albittron and went on to become the UFC light heavyweight champion by beating Wanderlei Silva for the vacated title at UFC 25. He then defeated the likes of Yuki Kondo, Evan Tanner, Elvis Sinosic, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Ken Shamrock.

He then lost the gold at UFC 44 against Randy Couture and never got his old glory back. The problems between Ortiz and Dana White are no secret, and it came to the point where the company wasn't big enough for both men.

Ortiz fought his last fight in the UFC at UFC 84, where he lost a unanimous decision to Lyoto Machida.

Since his UFC 44 war with Randy Couture, Ortiz has had severe back problems and has taken time off since his Machida fight. Now a free agent, it seemed that Ortiz would sign with Affliction, which could still be a possibility.

Ortiz has remained good friends with Lorenzo Fertitta and they still talk. Ortiz told Fertitta he would be interested in another run inside the UFC octagon.

Still recovering from back surgery, Ortiz would be ready to return to fighting in the summer of 2009.

It would be very interesting to see Ortiz return to the UFC because I think he has had alot of interesting fights there.

A rematch with Chuck Liddell could be interesting since Liddell hit rock bottom. A rematch against Rashad Evans would be great; Ortiz is the only man to bring Evans to a draw and would have won if a point hadn't been taken away in the second round.

Tito Ortiz vs. Wanderlei Silva, Tito Ortiz vs. Dan Henderson, Tito Ortiz vs. Rich Franklin, a rematch against Forrest Griffin—the possibilities are endless.
