Yakubu, Craig Bellamy and the English Premier League Team of the Week

Ed WymanJun 7, 2018

The latest round of English Premier League fixtures saw upsets galore as Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all lost games you would have expected them to win easily.

Happily, this makes the team of the week more interesting and less predictable than it usually is, especially when you also consider that Tottenham were held to a draw and Wigan continued their revival with a surprising draw against Stoke.

Elsewhere, Liverpool got a win over Newcastle, Everton got three points against West Brom and Wolves secured a draw with Bolton. Norwich grabbed a late equaliser against Fulham, in a match which saw Kerim Frei make a promising Premier League debut.

So, here is your Premier League team of the week. I should point out that I've only considered the most recent round of matches, making it more of a team of the round, I suppose.

The team lines up in a 4-3-3 formation.

GK Wayne Hennessey

1 of 11

Wolves' Wayne Hennessey was in impressive form against Bolton, making several vital saves to earn his side a point against Bolton.

The Welshman made some fantastic saves, including two made at full stretch. There was nothing he could have done nothing about the goal he did concede, a curling shot from Sam Ricketts that dropped perfectly into the top corner.

Hennessey is earning himself a reputation as a reliable goalkeeper; Wolves will need him to keep performing as they look to stay well away from the relegation zone.

LB Leighton Baines

2 of 11

Leighton Baines is going from strength to strength for Everton and Ashley Cole might just be beginning to get nervous about his position in England's starting XI.

Baines was excellent against West Brom, providing his usual mix of accurate crosses, breaks up the wing and solid defending.

He basically ran the show on the left side of the pitch and was able to come into the centre of the pitch to find room when required with relative ease.

CB Chris Samba

3 of 11

If Blackburn are to stay up this season, Chris Samba is going to have to keep going the way he has been so far.

Samba was in fantastic form against Manchester United, blocking everything that came his way and winning just about everything in the air as he did his best to keep United at bay.

He was also a threat in United's box, putting his size to good use. It was Samba's tussle with Dimitar Berbatov that won Blackburn their penalty, and it could prove to be a contribution that helps decide things at both ends of the table come May.

CB Sylvain Distin

4 of 11

Everton's French centre-back has, without garnering much attention, been one of the Premier League's most consistent centre-backs over the last few seasons.

He was in fine form against West Brom, making some impressive tackles, including a perfectly timed sliding challenge that, if it had gone awry, would have given away a penalty.

Equally strong in the air, Distin also mopped the ball up well when it ran loose in his third of the pitch.

Everton are having a decent season and have not conceded many goals, 20 in total so far, and Sylvain Distin has been influential in that team effort.

RB Craig Gardner

5 of 11

Craig Gardner is not primarily a right-back, but you wouldn't have thought so given his accomplished display in the position against the mighty Manchester City.

He made a vital goal-line clearance as Sunderland fought tooth and nail to prevent City from scoring and limited the dangerous Adam Johnson to one curling effort that just cleared the bar.

He went close himself up the other end, seeing his powerful driven shot go just wide of the post as Sunderland did their best to break City's dominance.

CM Stephen Ireland

6 of 11

Stephen Ireland has not had a great time of it over the last couple of seasons, but he put all of that to one side against Chelsea as he put on an impressive display.

The Irishman scored one and set up another as Aston Villa pulled off an upset against Chelsea.

Ireland's goal was only a tap-in, but he had already controlled the ball well and laid it off before advancing into the box, having his first effort blocked and reacting quickest to get the ball over the line.

He intercepted well for the second goal, and could have taken a shot himself, but selflessly gave the ball to Darren Bent, the better finisher, who slotted home.

Ireland has not had a regular starting berth at Aston Villa this season, but he has made his case for one with a Man of the Match performance.

CM Lee Cattermole

7 of 11

Lee Cattermole typified Sunderland's performance against Manchester City. He put in tackle after tackle on Manchester City's star-studded side and did it all without picking up a booking.

His performance was not about skill or grace, but about hard graft.

City, despite the number of chances they created, could never really get going against Sunderland, and that was partially down to the disruptive influence of Cattermole. By not allowing City's midfield to settle, he ensured that they had to rush their play and take shots too quickly.

CM Scott Sinclair

8 of 11

Scott Sinclair had a good outing against Tottenham Hotspur and was able to play the sort of football that both Brendan Rodgers and Harry Redknapp approve of.

The English midfielder was a constant threat going forwards, cutting in well off the wing as he utilised an always-potent combination of pace and skill.

He almost scored with an excellent curling effort that didn't quite curl enough, before playing in an excellent cross that Danny Graham just put wide.

He then saw a shot cleared off the line before finally scoring a tap-in after getting to the far post before anyone else could.

ST Craig Bellamy

9 of 11

Craig Bellamy's return to Liverpool is going rather well. The Welshman was excellent against Newcastle, scoring twice as Liverpool claimed victory.

He did well for his first goal, finding space in the box before receiving the ball and driving it low and hard into the bottom corner of the net. His second was a free kick that might have been saved on another day, but he made sure he hit the target and prevented the goalkeeper from seeing the ball until late in its flight.

Bellamy is having a good season with Liverpool, and seems to be enjoying his football on Merseyside.

ST Stéphane Sessèngnon

10 of 11

Stéphane Sessèngnon brought a touch of class to Sunderland's dogged display against Manchester City as he played an important counterattacking role.

He did well to get into a one-on-one position in the second half, beating a defender with good pace and skill, but was unable to beat Joe Hart.

He continued to threaten for Sunderland and eventually provided the through ball for Ji Dong-Won's winning goal, and had already provided one great through ball by that point.

Sunderland have not been prolific in front of goal, but Stéphane Sessèngnon is more than capable of creating enough chances for the side from the North East.

ST Yakubu

11 of 11

Yakubu is just a scoring machine at the moment and, like Blackburn, has stepped up his game against the big teams. He was excellent against an admittedly weakened Manchester United and deserved his two goals.

He took his penalty well, showing no nerves in front of an angry Old Trafford crowd, and worked hard for his second.

He showed good strength and determination to keep the defenders around him at bay, took the ball around Phil Jones with ease before getting too much power on the shot for David De Gea to deal with.

Twelve goals in 14 appearances so far this season for the Yak, and it's like he's never been away.
