And For My Next Miracle...Brett Favre's Future

Jason HenryJan 2, 2009

Brett Favre hasn’t decided if he’s going to come back and play for the New York Jets next season. In his last press conference of the season, he said that his health would play a huge role in deciding whether he should return or not. I wonder if he takes this much time on deciding what to eat in the morning?

Thing about it, we have gone through this saga for the past few seasons with Mr. Brett. Once the season has ended, he plays around with our emotions and pretends as if he’s going to call it quits. I guess after last season when he REALLY did retire, we didn’t give him enough attention.

Because he came back.

Brett “The Miracle Worker” Favre chose to give it another whirl and bless us with yet another season of boyish charm and aww shucks mentality. Only this time, his yearly off-season workout did not work. People were actually OK with seeing him retire. Some times is good to let go, but Brett couldn’t leave good enough alone.

Once he saw that the Packers were good with him moving on and that the general public reneged on their promise of jumping out of buildings across the country if he ever left them, he had to come back…right?

Wrong. Favre’s previous club (The Green Bay Packers) told him to hit the road and not to come back. Packers GM Ted Thompson even went so far as to fly down to Mississippi and try to convince Favre to stay retired.

That’s being dedicated to a cause that you believe in.

When Favre did announce that he was going to make a come back, he wanted it to be on his terms. He wanted to choose the team so that he could spite his old club. Tsk, tsk, tsk…And this is the guy that America is so in love with?

Of course! Americans love a good revenge filled story. Remember “Revenge of the Nerds?” I’m not saying that Favre is a nerd, but you get the picture.

Favre is that type of character that builds up such a strong legacy that he can do no wrong. In one of Peter King’s recent Monday morning quarterback articles, King interviews a gentleman that has been drunk off of Favre fumes for years. The guy goes so far as to say that he dreams about going shopping with Brett. I’m not sure if it’s ever healthy for another man to obsess over another man to the extent of dream shopping.

Reading on, the gentleman says that he worships Favre. Further down in the article, he goes on to say that he and Brett are expecting and they are hoping for an early fall pregnancy.

So I made the last part up, but really?

Here is my point. Some of America, not all, are way too obsessed with a guy who will make more in one game check than the most of us will in a lifetime. Favre may be a miracle worker on the field (at times) and he may have three MVP’s and one Super Ring, but is this really all worth it?

Will time stop once Brett decides to REALLY hang ‘em up? Will sportswriters across the country continue to gawk and awe at No. 4 on Sundays? Only time will tell and judging by this past season, Brett’s time is almost up.
