James Wiseman's Trade to Pistons Hypes Twitter as Former No. 2 Pick Gets Fresh Start
Unable to find consistent playing time with the Golden State Warriors, James Wiseman is reportedly heading to the Detroit Pistons.
Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pistons are sending Saddiq Bey to Golden State in exchange for the 21-year-old center, and the Warriors are redirecting Bey to the Atlanta Hawks for five second-round draft picks.
As well, Detroit sent Kevin Knox to the Warriors, who'll reroute him to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal for Gary Payton II, per Wojnarowski.
This brings an end to Wiseman's disappointing tenure with the Warriors. They selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft with the hope he could be a bridge between the core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green and the next great Golden State team.
Fans and analysts expressed hope that a low-pressure environment with the Pistons will allow Wiseman to showcase his skill set in ways he couldn't with the Warriors:
Wiseman struggled to fit in with Golden State's style of play. He's an impressive athlete who has been unable to put all of his skills to use in the NBA. The Warriors sent him to the G League in December to get him regular playing time.
Even though the Warriors brought him back before their Dec. 16 game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Wiseman's G League assignment marked the unofficial end of his time in Golden State.
Wiseman has only played in two games since Dec. 30, though he had a 30-point performance against the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 21 in a 143-113 loss. The Memphis alum averaged 9.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in 60 appearances for the Warriors over the past three seasons.
The Pistons can offer Wiseman regular playing time because they aren't prioritizing winning. Their 14-42 record is the worst in the Eastern Conference.
It's a great low-risk bet on a player who was regarded as one of the top prospects in a draft class that included Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball.
