Mavericks Rumors: DAL Eyeing Trade Options After Pairing Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving
After acquiring point guard Kyrie Irving to pair with superstar Luka Dončić, the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly eyeing more moves prior to Thursday's trade deadline.
According to Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News, the Mavs' front office "is not finished exploring trade options to further reshape and upgrade the roster around" Dončić in hopes of contending for a title this season.
The Mavs reportedly sent point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick, and two second-round picks in 2027 and 2029 to the Nets to acquire Irving along with veteran power forward Markieff Morris.
Caplan noted that "multiple people familiar with the Mavericks' pre-Irving approach highlighted Tim Hardaway Jr. as a player the team would like to move." The 30-year-old is signed through the 2024-25 season and is making $19.6 million this year.
Caplan also named rookie guard Jaden Hardy and third-year wing Josh Green as Dallas' "most valuable trade pieces." Hardy has seen limited minutes in his first year, but he's displayed flashes as a smooth scorer and skilled playmaker. Green has shown improvement in his third year and is shooting 41.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Veteran big men Davis Bertans and JaVale McGee are also potential trade candidates because of their bloated salaries. McGee, who fell out of the rotation early in the season, signed a three-year, $17.2 million deal in July. Bertans is set to make up to $49 million as he's signed through 2024-25.
The recent increase in activity from the Mavs indicates the team's commitment to chasing an NBA championship this season. Dallas knows that its window for title contention remains open as long as Dončić is on the roster, but he needs to have the right pieces around him to make a deep playoff run.
