NBA Rumors: Luka Dončić Was Consulted by Mavericks Before Kyrie Irving Trade
The Dallas Mavericks consulted Luka Dončić before their blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.
The Mavericks acquired Irving and Markieff Morris in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, dealing away Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick and two second-round picks, per Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic.
The deal gives the Mavericks an eight-time All-Star who is one of the best offensive players in the NBA, with him averaging 27.1 points and 5.3 assists per game this year. It also provides an immediate boost to the team's title chances, with DraftKings giving the team 12-1 odds to win a championship after entering the day at 30-1.
Despite the benefits, Dallas still made sure to clear the deal with its franchise player.
Dončić is certain to be affected by the move, especially with two dominant ball-handlers on the court at the same time.
Irving ranked 14th in the NBA in usage rate this year at 29.8 percent. This could cut into Dončić's 38.5 percent mark that ranks second in the league. Both players were also in the top eight in the league in field-goal attempts per game.
While the move does take some pressure off Dončić, he could see a decline in production as he gives up the ball on some possessions.
Irving is also known to make headlines, whether it's his sudden trade request that caught teammates off guard or his eight-game suspension earlier this season for failing to disavow antisemitic views after he posted about an antisemitic movie on social media.
The Mavericks are still willing to take the good with the bad after approving the trade, with Dončić clearly a part of the discussion.
If things don't work out, the point guard could still leave this offseason in free agency.
