The BCS Has Got to Go! The Case for the Utah Utes
As long as the current BCS system is allowed to continue, as long as public opinion is allowed to influence the who plays in the national title game, as long as there is no playoff system, a team like Utah will forever be on the outside looking in.
To any rational football fan who watched the Sugar Bowl, Utah did not, for a second, look like they were playing a team that was out of their league. All of the talk about the size and speed of the SEC amounted to nothing more than hot air.
I watched that game intently (twice) and I saw a tenacious defense that put more pressure on Wilson (Alabama's QB) than any other team he faced all year.
Eight sacks, two interceptions, a fumble, and the look of a deer in the headlights sums up his stat sheet pretty well, I think.
The Alabama defense, used to the slow-paced, smash-mouth football in the SEC, never could quite figure out how to stop the hurry-up style offense of Utah.
Coffee (Alabama's RB) ran for a whopping 36 yards, while the team finished with a total of 31 yards on 33 attempts. All said, I saw one team get dominated by another.
What does all this mean? It means that for all the accomplishments of Utah this year, and the impressive manner in which they proved the experts wrong, they will likely end up ranked no higher than third or fourth.
Despite a resume as impressive as any team out there, they will not be considered for a national title. With two victories over Top 10 opponents (Alabama, TCU), four potentially ranked opponents (tack on Oregon State and BYU), and, oh yes, the ONLY UNDEFEATED TEAM IN THE NATION, I cannot understand why this team wouldn't get serious consideration for the national title.
But wait, I forgot. We don't live in a world of common sense and rationality. We live in the political world, run by the Beast, the BCS. And as long as the BCS is around, a team like Utah will never get a shot at the national title...never...
Sure, mathematically it might be possible, but behind the politically correct congratulations and kudos given them, we all know deep down that we don't think they could beat Florida...Oklahoma...or even USC.
And when the final polls come out, once again, stigma will be stronger than actual performance...You watch...I'll eat every word if I'm wrong.
That is why, for the love of all that is sacred, I beg...Can we please have a playoff system!
This BCS money grubbing machine is absolutely ridiculous! It is archaic and wreaks or the good-ole-boys-club mentality.
While the sport of college football has continued to evolve to a point where teams all over the country are truly competitive, this system attempts to hold onto an age when only a handful of teams ruled the country. It is inherently biased and has got to go.
I take nothing away from Oklahoma, Florida, USC, or Texas; they are all great teams with tremendous athletes.
But as long as this system is in place, where a team can go undefeated, while compiling a body of work as impressive as Utah did this year and still get overlooked, I cannot recognize any of these other teams with blemished records as the true heir to the throne. Period.
Give us a playoff!
