Fantasy Football Big Board: Complete PPR Player Rankings for Week 7

Gary DavenportOct 19, 2022

Six weeks into the 2022 fantasy football season, it has been a wild ride.

At quarterback, it has become all about the haves and the have-nots. Either you have an elite option like Josh Allen of the Bills or Jalen Hurts of the Eagles, or you do not. Teams that do have a massive advantage. It's a similar story at tight end, where Travis Kelce of the Chiefs and Mark Andrews of the Ravens have been on a completely different level from everyone else.

At running back, Saquon Barkley looks like the player who took the league by storm as a rookie with the Giants. Christian McCaffrey is the Panthers offense. Nick Chubb of the Browns just keeps running tacklers over. And fantasy managers are starting to freak out in earnest about when Jonathan Taylor of the Colts might get going again.

If there's a position that has been predictable, it's the wide receivers—the fact that Cooper Kupp of the Rams, Tyreek Hill of the Dolphins and Stefon Diggs of the Bills are the top three players is hardly a surprise—especially when Minnesota's Justin Jefferson is fourth.

Were in the thick of it now. Injuries. Bye weeks. An ever-shifting landscape. But we've got your Week 7 helping hand—a set of position-by-position PPR rankings and matchups to exploit and avoid so you can maintain your fantasy footing and keep victory from slipping out from beneath your feet.

Let's get this hike underway.

Quarterbacks

For years, many in the fantasy community (including this writer) have been proponents of patience at the quarterback position. The edge gained by drafting an elite option just wasn't worth the hole it created at another position.

There's still a lot of season left, but so far in 2022 that strategy has been about as successful as the Carolina Panthers.

The gap between the No. 1 quarterback (Josh Allen of the Bills) and the No. 4 quarterback (Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs) is sizable enough—just under 30 fantasy points, or five points per game. Bump that out to the No. 11 quarterback (the now-injured Carson Wentz of the Commanders), and the gap becomes a chasm of 75 fantasy points. Over two touchdowns per game, every game.

If that gap stays anywhere near that massive all season long, draft strategy in 2023 is going to look a lot different than this year.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. ATL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,900)

It took Burrow a little time to get going this past week in New Orleans, but he finished the game with 300 passing yards and three touchdown passes. In Week 7, Burrow draws an Atlanta Falcons defense that has been a top-10 fantasy matchup for quarterbacks in 2022.

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys (vs. DET) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,700)

Prescott is fully expected to make his return to the playing field Sunday against the Lions after missing five games with a hand injury. There will probably be some rust, but a matchup with Detroit's 26th-ranked pass defense should be all the WD-40 he needs.

BAD MATCHUPS

Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders (vs. HOU) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,900)

Carr has been neither great nor terrible for fantasy managers this season, ranking just inside the top 12 in fantasy points per game. One wouldn't think the woeful Texans would be a bad matchup, but one would be wrong—Houston has given up the eighth-fewest fantasy points per game to quarterbacks.

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (at DAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,800)

Goff started the season strong, and despite a Week 5 clunker he still ranks eighth among quarterbacks in fantasy points per game. Top-10 numbers won't be easy to come by against Dallas, though—the Cowboys have allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points per contest to quarterbacks in 2022.

SLEEPER

Matt Ryan, Indianapolis Colts (at TEN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,400)

After a sluggish (to put it mildly) start to the 2022 season, Ryan came alive last week against the Jaguars, posting top-five fantasy numbers. Expecting that again isn't realistic. But a QB1 finish is well within reason against a Titans team that ranks in the top five in fantasy points per game given up to quarterbacks.

Running Backs

In the modern NFL, the running back position is a young man's game. And six weeks into the 2022 season, youth is most assuredly being served.

Breece Hall of the New York Jets was the first running back drafted last April, and while it took the former Iowa State standout a little while to get going, Hall has become a key contributor for the Jets offense. Hall gashed the Green Bay Packers for 116 yards on 20 carries Sunday, and he has eclipsed 120 total yards and scored a touchdown in each of the past two games.

It took an injury to Rashaad Penny for Kenneth Walker III to get his shot with the Seattle Seahawks, but the youngster from Michigan State has taken the opportunity and, well, ran with it. Over the last two contests, Walker has carried the ball 29 times, piling up 185 rushing yards and two scores.

Then there's Dameon Pierce of the Houston Texans. Pierce didn't carry the same draft-day pedigree of Hall or Walker, but he landed on a team with a clear need in the backfield. Pierce was off in Week 6, but in each of his last two games the bruiser from Florida surpassed 110 total yards and found the end zone.

At the six-week mark of the season, all three have worked their way into the RB1 conversation.

NOTE: The running back rankings have been updated to reflect the trade that sent Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys (vs. DET) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,0000)

Elliott just turned in easily his best performance of the 2022 campaign, averaging over six yards per carry and finding the end zone against a stout Eagles run defense. Now Elliott takes on a Lions defense that ranks dead last in the NFL against the run.

Josh Jacobs, Las Vegas Raiders (vs. HOU) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,500)

Jacobs was on fire before the Raiders' Week 6 bye, piling up a staggering 368 total yards and three touchdowns over his past two starts. That hot streak should continue against a Texans defense that has surrendered almost 165 rushing yards per game.

BAD MATCHUPS

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kansas City Chiefs (at SF) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,100)

Edwards-Helaire started the season red-hot, but over the past two weeks it has been more of a deep freeze—68 total yards and zero touchdowns over the last two games combined. That's not likely to change Sunday in a bad fantasy matchup for the position with the 49ers.

D'Andre Swift, Detroit Lions (at DAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,800)

After missing time with a shoulder injury, Swift is tentatively expected to be back out there Sunday against the Cowboys. It's a rotten matchup for a first game back—Dallas has surrendered the sixth-fewest PPR points per game to running backs in 2022.

SLEEPER

Kenyan Drake, Baltimore Ravens (vs. CLE) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,100)

When JK Dobbins sat out the second half of last week's loss to the Giants, it was Drake who assumed lead-back duties for the Ravens, finishing with 119 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. The Browns have been awful defending the run this year, allowing 200-plus yards in two of the last three games.

Wide Receivers

To an extent, the Week 6 leaderboard at wide receiver looked the same as it has all season long. Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins and Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills have been piling up PPR points on a weekly basis, and this past Sunday was no exception.

But there were a couple more additions to last week's wide receivers—and they were welcome ones.

Ja'Marr Chase of the Bengals had a big Week 1, but since then he had been quiet—from Week 2 to Week 5, Chase was just 29th in PPR points among receivers. That mini-slump came to a screeching halt Sunday in New Orleans as Chase hauled in seven catches for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

JuJu Smith-Schuster of the Kansas City Chiefs didn't enter the season amid Chase-esque expectations, but fantasy managers still expected more than the WR50 numbers he posted over the first five games of the year. In Week 6 against the Bills, Smith-Schuster finally delivered with five catches, 113 yards and his first score as a member of the Chiefs.

Now if we could just get an Elijah Moore sighting.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco 49ers (vs. KC) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000)

It goes without saying (or should) that Deebo Samuel is an every-week must-start. But Aiyuk could also post a gaudy stat line for a second week in a row Sunday against the Chiefs—Kansas City gives up a ton of PPR points to wide receivers, and the Niners are going to have to throw more than they like to keep pace with Patrick Mahomes.

Tee Higgins, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. ATL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400)

Higgins didn't enjoy the Week 6 success that Chase did, but it was encouraging to see him play a full complement of snaps and get 10 targets. If he can duplicate that target share Sunday in Cincinnati, he should thrive—especially with Chase likely to draw A.J. Terrell in coverage.

BAD MATCHUPS

Christian Kirk, Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. NYG) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,900)

Kirk only posted 24 yards on four catches last week, but a touchdown salvaged his fantasy stat line. It won't be easy to put up decent numbers for a second consecutive week—the Giants are quietly dead last in PPR points allowed to wide receivers this year.

Drake London, Atlanta Falcons (at CIN) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,400)

London is one of a number of rookie wide receivers who have made a fantasy dent in 2022. But this week's tilt with the Bengals presents an uphill climb—the Bengals are a bottom-10 fantasy matchup for receivers, and Chidobe Awuzie is one of the league's more underrated cornerbacks.

SLEEPER

Alec Pierce, Indianapolis Colts (at TEN) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,600)

Over the last two games, Pierce has emerged as a preferred target of Matt Ryan, hauling in 11 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown over the last two weeks. Throw in a top-three matchup for wide receivers with the Titans, and you have the recipe for fantasy success.

Tight Ends

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 16: Zach Ertz #86 of the Arizona Cardinals looks on against the Seattle Seahawks during the third quarter at Lumen Field on October 16, 2022 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Tom Hauck/Getty Images)

Much like at quarterback, there are two camps of fantasy managers six weeks into the season—those who have Travis Kelce of the Chiefs or Mark Andrews of the Ravens rostered, and those who do not.

There are two tight ends in the league with more than 80 PPR points at this point in the season—Andrews and Kelce. The gap between Kelce (the No. 1 tight end, because of course he is) and the No. 3 option (Zach Ertz of the Cardinals) is well over eight fantasy points per game.

Bump it out to the No. 11 tight end (Cincinnati's Hayden Hurst) and the gap balloons to almost 80 fantasy points. Kelce is less than one point away from being farther ahead of Hurst than every tight end not named Mark Andrews or Travis Kelce has total points.

That's ridiculous.

However, while that duo may be blowing every other tight end out of the water, Ertz does have one thing going for him. Last week's seven catches for 70 yards marked the sixth time in as many games that Ertz has posted double-digit PPR points.

Kelce is the only other tight end to accomplish that feat this season.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Gerald Everett, Los Angeles Chargers (vs. SEA) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,000]

In a season littered with disappointments at the tight end position, Everett has been something of a pleasant surprise in his first season with the Chargers. That should continue Sunday against a Seahawks team allowing the most PPR points per game to tight ends in 2022.

Hayden Hurst, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. ATL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,500]

Hurst managed just three catches for 21 yards against the Saints in Week 6. But in Weeks 4 and 5 combined, the fifth-year veteran caught nine passes for 80 yards and a pair of touchdowns. This week's matchup with the Falcons is also a favorable one for the position.

BAD MATCHUPS

T.J. Hockenson, Detroit Lions (at DAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800)

Hockenson's production for the season looks good at first glance, but his numbers are inflated by one ridiculous game in Week 4. Remove that game from the equation, and Hockenson is averaging less than 6.5 PPR points per game ahead of a tough matchup with a Dallas defense that just shut down Dallas Goedert.

Robert Tonyan, Green Bay Packers (at WAS) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,100)

Tonyan was one of the few things that went right for the Packers in last week's loss to the Jets, posting a 10/90/0 line on a dozen targets. However, while the Commanders haven't done much right this season, they have been stingy to opposing tight ends in 2022—29th in PPR points allowed.

SLEEPER

Evan Engram, Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. NYG) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,300)

Engram has had at least of modicum of fantasy value this season, posting a pair of games with double-digit PPR points. This week he gets a revenge game against his old team and a Giants defense that has been an above-average fantasy matchup for tight ends this season.

There's a rather unfortunate aspect to being a fantasy football analyst.

We all try as best we can to be right. Many times, we are. Those are good times.

However, it's unavoidable that at times we are also going to be wrong—and whoa boy was I wrong about the Jacksonville Jaguars defense in Week 6.

The table appeared set for a big game from the Jags. In Week 2, Jacksonville sacked Matt Ryan five times, picked him off three times and pitched a shutout on the way to the highest fantasy score among AFC defense that week.

So of course, in the rematch the Jags...did nothing. Not one sack. Not one takeaway. Thirty-four points allowed. And a negative point total in many fantasy scoring systems.

You know what hurts worse than being wrong? Being so wrong that you lose points doing it. Not miss out on. Not squander. Points are literally sucked away from your players who don't, well, suck.

I'm totally not bitter, though.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Younghoe Koo, Atlanta Falcons (at CIN)

The Falcons have been surprisingly proficient on offense, and Koo has hung around the fringes of the top 12 fantasy kickers this season. He'll crack the top 10 Sunday against a Cincinnati Bengals team allowing the most fantasy points per game in the AFC to kickers.

Green Bay Packers Defense (at WAS) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,400)

The Packers are admittedly reeling as a team. But despite Washington's Week 6 win, it can be argued the Commanders are whatever comes after reeling—and with Carson Wentz sidelined indefinitely, it's time for Taylor Heinicke: The Sequel under center in the nation's capital.

BAD MATCHUPS

Graham Gano, New York Giants (at JAX)

Gano has been a decent source of production for fantasy managers this season, but that could be difficult to maintain in Week 7. For whatever reason, the Jaguars don't give up many fantasy points to opposing kickers—fewest in the AFC, to be precise.

San Francisco 49ers Defense (vs. KC) (DraftKings DFS Value: $2,700)

Normally, the 49ers are the kind of defense you just start every week regardless of the opponent. But after last week's blah effort against the Falcons, it's become evident that the injuries on defense are having an impact. Plus there's the whole playing the Chiefs thing.

SLEEPER

New York Jets Defense (at Denver) (DraftKings DFS Value: $2,600)

The Jets defense was the star of last week's huge win at Lambeau Field, logging four sacks, two blocked kicks and a touchdown. Denver's offense may have looked slightly better in Week 7 against the Chargers, but that doesn't mean it looked good.

Before we get to this week's top 100 players (a list that can be of assistance in making flex decisions), the usual admonitions and whatnot.

The admonitions are twofold. First, there are no quarterbacks listed here. If your league utilizes superflex spots, then even in a year when so many quarterbacks are disappointing production-wise, you still almost always want one in that spot. Fifteen points is a bad game for a quarterback, whereas it's a good one for a back or wideout.

Second, it's Week 2 of the byes. The Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles are all off this week. No Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, Cooper Kupp, Justin Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown or DeVonta Smith.

In related news, that's a depressing list.

Finally, if your fantasy team is 2-4 or worse, don't freak out. Granted, an 0-6 or 1-5 hole is hard to crawl out of. But you can't look at it that way. Look at every week like a mini-season of its own. Focus on winning that week. Then try to string a couple together. Then three.

In 2020, I won a championship with a team that started 3-7. I have three separate teams that started this season 0-3 that are all now 3-3 and right back in it. There's still a long way to go.

Good luck this week!
