Broncos, 49ers Among Best Landing Spots for Christian McCaffrey amid NFL Trade Rumors

Theo SalaunOct 17, 2022

With head coach Matt Rhule fired in year three of his seven-year contract, the Carolina Panthers seem to be shifting into a full rebuild.

That's not a situation befitting the highest-paid running back in the NFL, so the wheels turn ever quicker for a potential Christian McCaffrey trade.

Should Carolina decide to part with their 26-year-old, the market will be a competitive one and the returning assets should be bountiful.

According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, there are four intriguing clubs that have shown "varying degrees of interest" in McCaffrey: the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills.

While there are sure to be other teams calling, those four—each with aspirations to win this season—should lead the market. Of the quartet, the Broncos and 49ers ought to be the top bidders.

The Rams and Bills each take a backseat in the bidding war for different reasons. The former, because head coach Sean McVay seems committed to a committee approach (as evidenced by Ian Rapoport's report about Cam Akers' dissatisfaction with his role); the latter, because their running back room has been good enough to pull off a 5-1 record (and should only improve as rookie James Cook continues acclimating).

The 2-3 Broncos and 3-3 49ers, conversely, both stick out as ideal landing spots for McCaffrey.

While Denver lost five draft picks in its offseason move for Russell Wilson, the team will either sit at 2-4 or 3-3 following Monday night's matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Regardless of the outcome, the Broncos ought to reach deeper into their draft coffers for the chance at championship contention offered by a player of the 2019 Pro Bowler's caliber.

Now healthy and looking as dynamic as ever, McCaffrey helps all phases of an offense. More enticing to the Broncos than most, he's also only fumbled twice since 2018.

With promising sophomore Javonte Williams out for the season due to an ACL tear, Denver's backfield is now led by Melvin Gordon. Although he's also proven as both a rusher and pass-catcher, he's averaging the fewest yards per carry (3.7) since his rookie season and has fumbled four times this season.

Pulling out the stops to bring in McCaffrey would rejuvenate the team's running game and provide Wilson with, arguably, the best safety blanket in the game. With the 33-year-old QB's championship window closing, a gamble on the Panthers star's upside ought to feel worth the draft picks it will cost.

Meanwhile, the 49ers also lost their starting running back to injury this season and have high hopes to win now. With Elijah Mitchell's season derailed by a sprained MCL in Week 1, San Francisco has turned to veteran Jeff Wilson. He's been strong as a replacement, but Sunday's 28-14 loss to the Falcons proved his limitations.

In the upset, the 26-year-old was held to 25 yards on seven carries and zero receiving yards on one target. Making matters worse, he lost one fumble as well.

Evidently, Wilson's floor as a rusher is low and the 49ers don't seem interested in his qualities as a pass-catcher. This season, he's yet to surpass three targets in any contest—quantifying how restricted his contributions to the offense can be.

Therefore, the Carolina man represents the opposite side of the spectrum, equally potent in both facets of an offense. One can only imagine what head coach Kyle Shanahan would be able to draw up with an elite talent like McCaffrey instead of the motley crew of RBs he's leaned on in years past.

The 49ers have draft picks and the impetus to seek out an edge in the playoff (and championship) hunt. With Wilson's limitations and the questions surrounding Mitchell's return from injury, spending up on a McCaffrey trade feels like an easy call.
