Updated 2023 NFL Draft Order After Sunday's Week 3 Results

Jake RillSep 26, 2022

When Week 3 of the 2022 NFL season is complete, only one team will have an 0-3 record. And it's not the type of team you'd expect to be in that position early in the year.

The Las Vegas Raiders have been playing close contests, with each of their first three games being decided by six or fewer points. However, they've been on the losing end of all three, including the 24-22 road defeat against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Before that, the Raiders lost 24-19 to the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1, then blew a 16-point fourth-quarter lead in their 29-23 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. So things aren't going too well for Las Vegas right now.

If the season ended today, the Raiders would have the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but they have 14 more games to try to get back on track.

Even though the season is still young, let's take a look at how the draft order would stack up at this point in time, with only one Week 3 game (Monday night's Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants matchup) remaining.

Are Raiders' Struggles Poised to Continue?

Could the Raiders be 0-5 when their Week 6 bye arrives? It's not too far-fetched to think they may be. That's because their next two games are against a pair of teams currently atop the AFC West: the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, which are both 2-1.

It hasn't been a good start to the Josh McDaniels era in Vegas. The Raiders head coach is still seeking his first win with the team. And even though they've only been outscored by 13 total points over three weeks, there are things that could have swung one or two of those games the other way.

Las Vegas appeared to be in great position to win its home opener in Week 2, before allowing 16 points (two touchdowns and two two-point conversions) to Arizona in the final eight minutes and 13 seconds of regulation.

The Raiders' defense even got a key stop in overtime, before a Hunter Renfrow fumble was picked up by Cardinals cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., who returned it 59 yards for a walk-off touchdown.

In Week 3, Las Vegas was playing from behind after Tennessee built a 14-point lead by halftime. The Raiders came back and had an opportunity to tie the game with 1:14 to go, but their two-point conversion attempt failed and the Titans won 24-22.

So while Las Vegas isn't playing badly at all times, it's struggling to put together complete games. And if it doesn't learn to do so soon, it may be too late to save its season.

Tough Matchups Ahead for Texans

Other than the Raiders, the Texans are the only other winless team in the NFL. After tying with Indianapolis in Week 1, Houston has suffered back-to-back road losses at Denver and Chicago.

Things aren't going to get any easier for the Texans. Their next five games are against the Chargers, Jaguars, Raiders, Titans and Eagles (with a Week 6 bye in the middle of that stretch). Las Vegas may be the worst team among that group, but it also may not be as bad as its 0-3 record might indicate.

There have been bright spots through the Texans' first three games, though. Rookie running back Dameon Pierce had his best showing yet in Week 3, accumulating 102 total yards and scoring his first NFL touchdown. They also have a positive turnover differential, with five takeaways and only three giveaways.

However, Houston is giving up 410 total yards per game (fourth most in the NFL), and it's especially struggling against the run, allowing a league-high 202.3 rushing yards per contest.

Until the Texans start to play better defensively, their troubles may continue.

Seahawks Trending in Wrong Direction

The Seattle Seahawks opened the season in impressive fashion, defeating their former quarterback (Russell Wilson) and the Broncos in a Week 1 Monday night matchup. But since then, things have not gone nearly as well for them.

In Week 2, the Seahawks fell 27-7 to the 49ers. Then in Sunday's matchup, they lost 27-23 to the Falcons, which were winless through the first two weeks of the season.

Atlanta was expected to be among the bottom tier of teams in the NFL this year, so it's not a good sign for Seattle that it lost that contest.

Now, the Seahawks go on the road in Weeks 4 and 5 for matchups against the Lions and Saints, respectively. And they'll be away from home for four of their next six games. So the struggles may only be beginning for Seattle.

It would help if the team could generate more offense, particularly on the ground. Its 74.7 rushing yards per game are the fourth fewest in the NFL, and it has yet to score a rushing touchdown in three weeks.
