UFC 141: What Is Left for Jon Fitch in MMA?
It took UFC welterweight Jon Fitch almost an entire year to get back into the octagon after injuring his shoulder.
It only took Johny Hendricks 12 seconds to deliver Fitch his first loss since 2008.
For a fighter like Fitch, someone who has beaten some of the best in his division and accomplished so much in his career, there really isn't much left for him in mixed martial arts.
That is, unless he's serious about making another title run.
Fitch has been calling for a rematch with Georges St. Pierre, but the UFC brass know that this fight isn't marketable because both fighters are known for their boring styles.
But now that plan is even further out of reach for Fitch since suffering his latest defeat.
What Fitch needs to do is evolve as a fighter. His style earns him victories, but as time goes on, opponents will learn how to overcome it.
During his bout with BJ Penn, the former two-time champion gave Fitch a run for his money, resulting in a draw.
He doesn't need to go out there and start doing flying kicks and knees, but Fitch does need to change things up to excite fans and keep his opponents guessing.
If Fitch keeps doing the same old thing, then there really isn't much left for him.
Another lengthy winning streak may give him a title shot, but there really are no other challengers for Fitch to face who would make for meaningful battles.
Ultimately, Fitch will become a gatekeeper of the welterweight division.
But if he makes some changes, and starts getting a buzz among the fans, then a championship bout might not be as far off as he thinks.
