Updated 2023 NFL Draft Order After Sunday's Week 1 Results

Jake RillSep 12, 2022

The Jacksonville Jaguars owned the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft in both 2021 and 2022. With the expected growth the franchise is hoping to see this season, it will be hoping to not end up with the top pick again in the 2023 draft.

The season didn't get off to the best start for the Jaguars, as they suffered a 28-22 road loss to the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field on Sunday afternoon. But Jacksonville held the lead in the fourth quarter, and there were some positives for the team to take away.

Of the league's 32 teams, 30 have played a season-opener (the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks are set to face off Monday night). So, at this point, it's impossible to know who will struggle the most and have the best opportunities to draft the top college players who will be part of the 2023 class.

However, let's take a look at the projected draft order through the majority of the Week 1 action in the 2022 season.

Jaguars Set Up for More Positive Results in 2022

The Jaguars have strong building blocks on both sides of the ball, including the two most recent No. 1 overall draft picks: quarterback Trevor Lawrence (2021) and linebacker Travon Walker (2022). And both of those youngsters impressed at times on Sunday.

Lawrence passed for 275 yards and a touchdown, connecting with James Robinson for a three-yard score in the third quarter. The second-year QB also led a pair of scoring drives early in the fourth, which helped the Jags take a 22-14 lead. Lawrence's lone interception came on Jacksonville's final offensive play of the game with one minute and 10 seconds to go, sealing the game for Washington.

Meanwhile, Walker's NFL debut was an impressive one. He had four tackles, one sack and one interception, becoming the first player with a sack and an interception in his first game in the league since the Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt in 2017.

With Doug Pederson now the Jaguars' head coach, they should do a better job of closing out these types of games. They're also part of a weak AFC South that will likely give them an opportunity to earn multiple division wins.

So while Jacksonville opened the season with a loss, it played well enough for it to believe it won't end up with the worst record in the NFL again in 2022.

Will Bears Be Better Than Expected This Season?

It seemed likely the Bears could end up having the type of season that would give them a top-five pick in the 2023 draft, perhaps even the No. 1 overall selection. The team is rebuilding, and there appeared to be plenty of holes on its roster.

But Chicago got off to a surprising start Sunday with a 19-10 comeback win over the San Francisco 49ers, who reached the NFC Championship Game last season. The Bears trailed 10-0 midway through the third quarter, then scored the final 19 points of the game.

A Week 1 upset win doesn't necessarily translate to a successful season. But if first-year head coach Matt Eberflus can get Chicago to build off its early momentum, then maybe it will have a better year than many would have predicted.

Or this could be a high point for the Bears. They have some winnable games early on their schedule (Week 3 vs. the Houston Texans, Week 4 at the New York Giants). But if they lose contests like that, then things could quickly spiral out of control for a team that has a young, inexperienced roster like Chicago.

Which Teams Are Most Likely to End Up with No. 1 Pick?

The Jets, Falcons and Panthers are among the teams projected by most to be near the bottom of the NFL standings who lost Sunday. While there are still 17 weeks to go in the regular season, none of these squads had the start they wanted.

New York struggled during a 24-9 loss to Baltimore. However, the Jets' offense is being led by veteran quarterback Joe Flacco while Zach Wilson recovers from knee surgery. Once the second-year QB returns, things might start to go a bit better for this team.

Atlanta nearly pulled off an upset over New Orleans at home in its opener. But the Saints erased a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit, winning 27-26 on Wil Lutz's 51-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining.

Carolina had a disappointing showing in a 26-24 loss to Cleveland. Although the Panthers erased a 13-point deficit and took a one-point lead in the final minutes, the Browns came back and won on Cade York's 58-yard field goal with eight seconds to go.

Will any of the Jets, Falcons or Panthers end up with the No. 1 pick in 2023, or at least an early selection? Things could obviously go in a better direction for any of these teams this fall, but it also wouldn't be surprising to see any of them struggle.
