Boston Bruins New Years Rewind: The Greatest Jack Edwards Moments of 2011

Tim FontenaultDec 31, 2011

It's true, Jack Edwards is one of the most biased commentators in American sports. No Bruins fan can argue that—not that it's a bad thing.

Edwards has no reason to be impartial. He is the NESN commentator for the Boston Bruins. If he isn't going to show the love for his beloved team, why is he in the booth?

Commentators are supposed to make the game entertaining for those fans watching on television or on the radio. Bruins fans would love to be part of the incredible atmosphere in the TD Garden, but the next best thing is to sit at home as Jack Edwards brings you the thrilling commentary on NESN.

He finds a way to make the most boring games entertaining and despite the hatred he gets from opposing teams' fans and his bias, he is one of the best commentators around.

As 2012 approaches, we look back on some of Edward's most memorable moments from 2011.

Spoiler Alert: A lot of them are from matchups with Montreal, but being the Bruins' biggest rival—meaning the team Jack Edwards hates most—it makes sense.

15) Edwards Liked Seguin's Hat Trick, Especially the Second Goal

1 of 16

Tyler Seguin is filthy and when he scored his first career hat trick, fittingly against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jack Edwards enjoyed it.

14) Jack Edwards Is Not German

2 of 16

Jack Edwards is good at commentating in his own voice.

In a German accent? Eh, not so much.

13) Boychuk's Goal Gets Its Own Name

3 of 16

This one's just kind of funny because it's a clever call of the goal, and it was a solid rip by Johnny Boychuk.

12) Edwards and Andy Brickley Hate on Benoit Pouliot (Pre-Bruins)

4 of 16

Benoit Pouliot joined the Bruins in the offseason and has been a revelation, but this is from the playoffs when Pouliot was a Canadien, hated, and terrible.

11) Edwards Makes Fun of Chad LaRose

5 of 16

Chad LaRose of the Carolina Hurricanes decided to whine about his elbowing penalty after clearly popping Zdeno Chara in the head.

He probably didn't realize that Jack Edwards spots anything worthy of making fun of.

10) Jack Edwards, the Boxing Announcer

6 of 16

What a night this was in Boston. The Bruins and Canadiens, two bitter rivals, put on a show of incredible style. 8-6 was the final score and on at least two occasions all five skaters on each side danced with each other.

There was also a Tim Thomas-Carey Price heavyweight showdown in the second period.

This was the fight in the last minute of the third period. Each skater went after somebody and every Bruin came out a winner, much to the delight of Mr. Edwards, who showed his talent for commentating a boxing match.

9) Nate Thompson the Victim of a "Pelvis-Rupturing" Hit

7 of 16

Johnny Boychuk rocked Nate Thompson in a game against the Lightning in April. According to Edwards, Thompson's waist was three inches smaller afterward.

8) "HE DOVE ONE TIME TOO MANY!"

8 of 16

Roman Hamrlik tried to dive after a little contact with Chris Kelly. What happens? The ref ignores the dive, Kelly keeps going, Kelly scores, Hamrlik cries to the ref and Jack Edwards gets really excited.

7) "You Don't Do That to Tim Thomas!"

9 of 16

Joe Vitale of the Pittsburgh Penguins made the mistake of running into Tim Thomas.

Boston doesn't allow anything to slide. They are one of the most brutish teams in the league and anyone can play enforcer at any time. Gregory Campbell responded to the incident and while he eventually ended up on the bottom, he got enough good hits in to get Jack Edwards excited.

6) Summertime in Philadelphia!

10 of 16

Milan Lucic put the dagger in Game 4 against the Flyers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. After the horror of the 2010 playoffs, Jack was more than happy to show Philly the door.

5) An Ode to the Composite Stick

11 of 16

He isn't really a fan of the composite stick if you can't tell from his lovely poem.

4) Edwards Explains That Biting Is Voluntary

12 of 16

Edwards teamed up with Boston radio station WEEI during the Stanley Cup Finals, as of course NESN would not be broadcasting any games. Of course, he had to give his two cents as always and it was no different with the Alex Burrows situation.

Yes, folks, Alex Burrows bit Patrice Bergeron. It happened. As Jack points out, no one accidentally bites ever. Biting is not something you do unless you intend to do so.

3) Edwards' Imperious Conceit Speech

13 of 16

He's such a creative man. This is hilarious and just shows how much Jack hates the Canadiens.

2) "THIS! IS! A! SKUNKING!"

14 of 16

This is one of the greatest Jack Edwards moments ever.

Boston annihilated Montreal on March 24th, winning 7-0, a scoreline that Edwards likes to call a "skunking" following Gregory Campbell's goal in the third period.

1) GET UP!

15 of 16

Hamrlik again tries to get a call. Edwards doesn't like that too much and leads to his line of the year—one that was later used to create a song honoring the Bruins' Stanley Cup victory.

Happy New Year!

16 of 16

Here's to hoping everyone has a safe and happy New Year and 2012 brings us even more of the great Jack Edwards.
