Alamo Bowl 2011: Terrance Ganaway Rescues Robert Griffin III in Historic Clash
In the highest-scoring regulation bowl game ever, the Baylor Bears beat the Washington Huskies 67-56, and it's mostly thanks to the phenomenal performance from Terrance Ganaway.
Don't get me wrong, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III was good, but his running back stole the show, scoring five touchdowns and rushing for 200 yards.
If you like offense, then the Valero Alamo Bowl was your kind of game. Both teams accounted for 1,397 total yards of offense, which has to make the defensive coordinators sick.
There were spectacular plays all over the place. The game went back-and-forth all night long, but in the end, Ganaway came through in the clutch scoring the last two touchdowns to help Baylor pull away.
The Bears were in a hole, down 42-24 early in the third quarter. They rallied back, and with a few minutes left to go, Ganaway bolted past the defense for a 43-yard touchdown run to give Baylor the double-digit lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Huskies fumbled, and the game was over.
This gave Baylor its first postseason victory since 1992. The 123 total points is the highest in regulation since the 2001 GMAC Bowl between Marshall and East Carolina, which scored 102 in regulation, then 125 after double overtime. That still stands as the overall bowl record.
In a night where many NFL scouts had their eyes on Griffin III, Ganaway delivered big-time, showing that he too can be a dynamic force.
Listed at 6'0", 240 pounds, the senior running back has the skills for the next level, and his draft stock took a major leap thanks to such a dominant game.
Granted, the Huskies defense isn't all that great, but Ganaway knew he needed to shine in this game, and he did that plus some.
Bleacher Report's draft guru, Matt Miller, tweeted last night where he has Ganaway headed in the 2012 NFL draft.
No doubt this game helps him, but scouts will look at the fact that the Huskies defense was downright atrocious. In fact, there was hardly any defense in this game at all, as each team only had to punt twice.
Ganaway will have to show this wasn't a fluke by having a good game in the Senior Bowl.
As for Griffin III, he still had a strong showing, especially displaying his skills on the ground with this score.
The question everybody is thinking right now is whether he'll leave early for the NFL.
One scout tweeted pre-game and post-game quotes from RGIII that give a pretty good idea about his eventual decision.
The Huskies offense should be given some love to, as it played on heck of a game. Quarterback Keith Price threw four touchdown passes and ran for three.
He's only a sophomore, and this game is a great sign of things to come for Washington. If junior running back Chris Polk doesn't leave early, the Huskies can certainly make some noise in the Pac-12 next year.
However, Polk has the potential to be a late first-round pick, meaning he's better off leaving while his ceiling his high. Polk has rushed for over 1,100 yards in three consecutive seasons, including two straight with over 1,400 yards.
Both teams will try to forget how horrible their defensive play was and focus on the positives. Baylor will be losing some top talent next year, especially if RGIII leaves.
The Bears should relish in this moment because next year won't be as good.
The 2011 Valero Alamo Bowl was an epic showdown and one for the history books, and much to everyone's dismay, it wasn't Robert Griffin III that was in dominant form, but rather Terrance Ganaway going out in style in his final collegiate game.
