2011 Bowl Predictions: Thrilling Games to Close out 2011
Nothing like closing out 2011 in style.
Before we get set for the BCS bowls, there are still several bowl games to whet the appetite.
Here's a look at the most thrilling games to head into the new year.
3. Chick-fil-A Bowl: Virginia vs. Auburn
Auburn, at 7-5, is not the same team that won the national championship behind Cam Newton and Nick Fairley last season.
The defense has struggled the pick up the slack, allowing 29.3 points per game, and the offense has only averaged 24.3 points per game.
On top of that, running back Michael Dyer has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.
Virginia, on the other hand, has had a resurgence this season, going 8-4 behind a balanced offensive attack and a defense that has the ability to step up (allowing 21 points to Georgia Tech on Oct. 15).
This should be a close game. However, in the end, I give this game to Auburn.
2. Hunger Bowl: UCLA vs. Illinois
Both UCLA and Illinois have had disappointing seasons, but that doesn't mean this won't be a close game.
Both of these teams' head coaches were fired this season, so a bowl win would be a welcome boost. Illinois, in particular, has had a nightmare second half of the season, losing its last six games.
UCLA does have a good rushing attack, averaging 190.7 rushing yards per game this season. Illinois, on the other hand, has a stingy defense, allowing 20.1 points per game.
How these two square off will be key.
I'm picking UCLA.
1. Sun Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Utah
Both of these teams have explosive rushing attacks, but Utah does have the ninth-ranked rushing defense.
Georgia Tech can hurt you in a variety of ways on the ground, utilizing fakes and options to keep defenses on their toes. Utah has running back John White IV, a special player.
Expect a lot of running in this game and for the Yellow Jackets to ultimately come away victorious.
