Colin Kaepernick's Workout Partner Says Multiple NFL Teams Have Shown Interest in QB

Tim DanielsMar 23, 2022

David Robinson, a trainer who recently held an on-field workout with Colin Kaepernick, said he's spoken with at least five teams looking for more information on the quarterback.

Robinson told TMZ Sports in an interview released Wednesday that he came away from those conversations thinking Kaepernick may finally receive a second chance in the NFL.

"A few teams have reached out to me and asked how his arm looked," Robinson said. "They have reached out and asked about him."

He added: "I definitely think that this go-around, he may get a shot."

Kaepernick, who's always maintained a desire to rejoin an NFL roster, has been hosting workouts in recent weeks in an effort to prove he deserves that opportunity.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett is among the players who've taken part:

Kaepernick last played during the 2016 season. During that year's preseason, he began taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, beginning a movement across the NFL and other sports.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," he told NFL Media at the time. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

He played the rest of the campaign with the San Francisco 49ers but went unsigned after becoming a free agent the following offseason. He and former teammate Eric Reid, who joined Kaepernick's protests and initially went unsigned in 2017 free agency, filed a collusion lawsuit against the league that was eventually settled out of court.

Kaepernick completed 59.8 percent of his throws with 72 passing touchdowns and 30 interceptions across 69 games (58 starts) in six years with the Niners. He added 2,300 rushing yards and 13 scores on the ground.

His dual-threat skill set is an ideal fit for the modern NFL, but how he'd perform after five seasons away from the league is impossible to predict.

It's been a whirlwind stretch within the quarterback market this offseason, so the question is whether Kaepernick may attract interest as the dust settles and teams begin looking to fill the backup and No. 3 roles on their roster.

Robinson told TMZ there's a pretty strong consensus among those who've worked out with the 34-year-old Wisconsin native that he at least deserves a shot.

"He definitely has the ability to play on somebody's roster—like, right now," Robinson said. "Like, a couple of the guys that were in the session that were on NFL teams were saying that his arm is just as strong as guys that we got on our roster right now and can play."

Others have made similar comments in the past, however, and Kaepernick remained unsigned. Whether that'll change before the 2022 season kicks off is a mystery.
