Brock Lesnar: UFC Star Will Dominate After Clearing Final Hurdle
It’s time to get excited about UFC 141's main event.
Friday’s prime-time event on Spike that features former UFC champion Brock Lesnar against Alistair Overeem was quietly in doubt because of Lesnar’s weight. He hasn’t participated in a fight for 14 months as he has been dealing with intestinal diverticulitis, which has caused his weight to fluctuate tremendously.
But he officially weighed in at 266 pounds, which just barely clears the maximum weight allowed. Lesnar (5-2) has been MIA since losing his title to Cain Velasquez in October 2010, so rust could be a factor.
But let’s be real: When it comes to heavyweight fighting, bulk > speed.
Lesnar brings his celebrated wrestling background to the ring against Overeem (35-11), who is most comfortable as a kickboxer.
Lesnar may have left the public eye for a year, but according to USA Today’s Sergio Non, Lesnar has not been on a 14-month vacation:
"He has been honing his striking skills for the past several months by working with UFC and K-1 veteran Pat Barry. "This guy, when he first got to my gym, ran circles around me," Lesnar says. "Now we're banging and it's look-out time."
Overeem has never faced anyone with Lesnar's combination of size, power and wrestling skill.
"
Too much power, too much quickness and too much experience on the national stage for Lesnar to lose. I expect Overeem to get devoured by the combination once he realizes he can’t get off more than a few of his kicks.
Expect Lesnar to re-enter the consciousness of all UFC fans just in time for another run at the title in 2012.
