TNA: Could an "Invasion" Angle Work on Impact Wrestling?

David LevinDec 28, 2011

Please Note: The writer of this article wanted to pose the question he has wanted to ask for some time. And with the onset of bad college bowl games and enough reality television to sink the Titanic, he finally got up the nerve to post this article. No one was hurt in the writing of this article with the exception of a few brain cells, of which the 40-year-old writer needs very badly.

If TNA is so concerned with the “ratings game” with the WWE, why not take a page out of the book of former WWF and WCW wrestlers? Try new things but stick with the basics of a tried and true plan. Why not plan an “invasion”?

I am not talking about the “they are coming” switch Fortune had when it turned on Immortal, but more of a “takeover” of WCW by “outsiders” who can make a difference and maybe spike ratings. While it may not get the complete effect the Scott Hall/Kevin Nash walk-in had on WCW, little by little, an invasion angle could work.

No, I am not altered by anything while writing this. I actually think this could work.

Since TNA is so “clique” centric and has been looking for balance, bringing the forces together could do that, much like Sting, Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Lex Luger did when they faced the New World Order.

Here is the plan.

First, there would have to be a lot of fat cut from WWE rosters. And when wrestlers are let go, they need a place to land. One by one they appear. One week, John Morrison and Melina come in together (you need some sugar with the explosion). The next, there is Chris Masters. Then, Drew McIntyre. Maybe add Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel.

Throw in Joe Hennig and finally Ted DiBiase, Jr. You have an invasion and talent that can supplant some of the dead weight that has been plaguing the company. Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett become obsolete (I know Jarrett was fired, but he will reappear). Others will follow.

Then, like in the former plan by WCW, wrestlers from the promotion join the new faction. Abyss, who is the most conflicted man in wrestling, maybe The Pope and when he returns from OVW, Rob Terry.

It does make sense and it means RATINGS.

Look at the roster right now of TNA and you see great talents that are not used properly. There needs to be a push, a sense of urgency. It means pulling viewers away from SmackDown and a few from Monday night.

While some of these talents may be the future of the WWE, they are going nowhere at the moment and they will find their way back to the WWE roster. But so will the Lucky Cannons, Seth Rollins’ and Bo Rotundos of the world.

While it is still far-fetched, it could work with the proper writing and editing. Eric Bischoff could show he is a genius again and grab Vince McMahon’s stones like he has in the past. If nothing more, it means the promotion is working to improve its talent and try new things, even if it is an idea from the past.
