Lakers' Markieff Morris Apologizes for 'Misunderstanding' over Chris Paul Injury
Los Angeles Lakers forward Markieff Morris apologized to Phoenix Suns governor Robert Sarver over a "misunderstanding" surrounding Chris Paul's shoulder injury.
"I think he thought something happened that didn't when CP got hurt, and I kind of said some stuff to him," Morris told reporters Friday. "I don't know if he heard about it, but I apologize to him for that because it was a misunderstanding and, you know, I'm older now and I shouldn't have replied the way I did and I just want him to know that." (warning: video contains profanity):
Paul was limited to 23 minutes in Phoenix's 115-85 Game 5 victory. Wesley Matthews went to box him out in the third quarter and tweaked an existing shoulder issue for the 11-time All-Star.
Emotions were high in the moment as some wondered whether Matthews was a bit too physical inside. He was only assessed with a common foul, and Paul told reporters he thought it was a clean play upon viewing a replay.
The extent of Sarver and Morris' conversation remains unclear.
Morris spent his first four-and-a-half seasons in the NBA with Phoenix, and Sarver didn't have totally kind things to say about the veteran forward as he was on the way out.
Speaking with the Arizona Republic's Dan Bickley in January 2016, Sarver lamented "millennial culture" and singled out Morris.
"My whole view of the millennial culture is that they have a tough time dealing with setbacks, and [Morris] is the perfect example," he said. "He had a setback with his brother in the offseason, and he can’t seem to recover from it. I’m not sure if it’s the technology or the instant gratification of being online."
Based on Morris' comments Friday, there doesn't appear to be any ill will between the two parties.
