Floyd Mayweather's Uncle Debunks Morales and Canelo Rumors, Suggests Maidana

Floyd Mayweather's uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather spoke with Boxing Scene recently about whether WBC junior middleweight (154 lbs) Saul "Canelo" Alvarez would face Mayweather on May 5.

May 5 is the date reserved for Mayweather's return at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Though Team Mayweather have stated they want Manny Pacquiao next, the two have failed twice to negotiate a fight.

Many suspect that in the event of a breakdown in negotiations with Pacquiao once again, a Mexican fighter is likely to be Mayweather's ring foe since May 5 is Cinco de Mayo, or Mexican Independence Day.

Saul Alvarez just stopped veteran boxer Kermit Cintron in five rounds this past Saturday in Mexico. Afterward, Alvarez stated a desire to face Mayweather next.

Roger Mayweather's response to that is as follows, according to Boxing Scene:

He can go in there and he likes to be like Floyd. He can come in like Floyd if he wants to...but he ain't no match...

"

Mayweather's uncle also went on to dismiss rumors of Mexican legend Erik Morales being Mayweather's potential foe, but made a surprising suggestion for Mayweather's potential opponent.

"

He ain't going to fight no Morales. Morales is too easy...it's a mismatch. I think he could probably fight...Maidana. The one who beat Ortiz. I think that would be a better match than fighting a Morales. He's an aggressive type of fighter and he has a win over a major fighter.

"

Marcos Maidana is a young, strong, hard-punching Argentine fighter. He vanquished Victor Ortiz in six rounds back in 2009 in the junior welterweight division.

Maidana would go on to lose a competitive unanimous decision to WBA and IBF junior welterweight champion Amir Khan and win a close majority decision over Morales.
