NFL Week 11 Fantasy Football: Calvin Johnson and More Players to Avoid

Andrew KulhaNov 19, 2011

It may seem unconventional, but I can guarantee you that Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is a bad fantasy football play in Week 11 of the 2011 NFL season.

In fact, so is his quarterback, Matthew Stafford, but we'll get to that later.

Johnson started off the year hotter than any wideout we have seen in a long time.

He accumulated two touchdowns in each of the Lions' first four games and seemed on track to break records.

Since then though, he's only snagged three touchdowns in five games.

He's been dealing with some injury issues, as has quarterback Matthew Stafford, so it's possible that those injuries are playing into the decline.

Not only that, but teams are stepping up the double coverage on him and are starting to wise up on the deep jump ball that the Lions love to run.

Johnson is obviously cooling off a bit, but he's not the only player I'd stay away from this week.

Here are some other players to avoid in Week 11:

Matthew Stafford, QB Detroit Lions

Let's stick with the Lions for a minute. There is no doubt that they are reeling a bit after taking a massive beatdown at the hands of the Chicago Bears.

Stafford has been dealing with a fractured finger on this throwing hand that he says isn't bothering him, but he has to wear gloves because of that.

His 33-63 four-interception performance would also suggest that there may be something to worry about.

The Lions are facing somewhat of a trap situation this week with Cam Newton and the Panthers coming to town, and the Green Bay Packers looming over that with a short week on Thanksgiving.

All in all, I would avoid Stafford until we can see a little bit more consistency out of him, or at least a resemblance of health.

LeGarrette Blount, RB Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Blount has been a decent option in fantasy with 434 yards and three touchdowns on the year, but has more-so served as a RB2/sub.

This week I wouldn't even consider playing him.

It's not as much the fact that the Packers are so good on defense, which they are even with their flaws, but it's more because the Buccaneers are going to struggle to keep up.

The Packers turn games into shootouts, and Blount will be useless in a game where the Buccaneers need to throw the ball a lot to keep up.

They already have trouble moving the ball, averaging 331 yards per game and 17.3 points, compared to the Packers at 409.7 and 35.6.

Blount shouldn't even be in consideration for a start.
