Big East Conference Expansion: Boise State and BYU a Package Deal?

Martin SondermannOct 27, 2011

With all the news, buzz, rumors and talk going on about conference expansion lately, it is hard to know what is true and what isn't.

However, one thing that has been noticed the past few days is that the Big East is certainly on the move. Officials from the Big East were in Colorado on Wednesday talking to Air Force. Rumor has it, that they will be in Boise on Thursday, but that can't be proven—yet.

But, one interesting development is that Boise State has contacted at least one conference about adding its sports other than football, which is a sign that the Broncos are taking a serious look at the Big East football only invite.

We know of course that the West Virginia to the Big 12 story has come to an abrupt halt. No one is talking about why for sure, but rumor is the Big 12 needed more information—translation: not so fast; we want to look at Louisville first.

So what happens if Louisville or West Virginia bolt for the Big 12?

It seems like there might be another story brewing right now. Could BYU be considering a move to the Big East?

In a recent interview, BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall said something that caught my attention.  When asked about all of the conference expansion, particularly the "Super Conference" trend.  Mendenhall said the following;

"

"Boise State finds themselves in a similar situation. It would make a lot of sense to me, if anyone wanted a partnership and wanted a natural rivalry, to take us and Boise and put us in the league ... you'd have two excellent football teams, and I think people would be surprised at what would happen."

"

Two words: what? and wow!

Then, late last night I read the latest update from Tom Luicci and the Newark Star-Ledger, which seems to have the inside track on all this stuff, and what does he mention in his article?  BYU.

Luicci quotes a person on the condition of anonymity, because they are not officially supposed to say anything to the media, as saying;

"

"BYU for football only is a possible option if West Virginia or Louisville leave."

"

All I have to say is that this would be very good for the Big East, Boise State and all the other schools looking to join a newly replenished Big East Conference.

A western division that included Boise State, BYU, Air Force, Houston, SMU and either Louisville or Cincinnati would be awesome.

The eastern division would include West Virginia if they stay, Louisville or Cincinnati if they don't, Navy, Central Florida, Rutgers, UConn and South Florida.

Of course, this all depends on who leaves for the Big 12, but it looks like a solid conference could be shaping up.

I know Bronco fans would love to see another western partner in this alliance, and BYU is the perfect fit.

Let's hope the rumors are true.  I will keep you posted.
