BCS Rankings: Is Oklahoma State Worthy of Their No. 3 Ranking in AP Poll?

Jonathan WooOct 23, 2011

The thing about college football rankings is that if you keep winning and those ahead lose, upward movement is inevitable. If you maintain an undefeated record late into the season, destiny is yours, for the most part.

In this week's AP Top 25, Oklahoma State benefited from Oklahoma's loss to Texas Tech, as the Cowboys moved into the No. 3 behind LSU and Alabama respectively.

But how worthy is Oklahoma State of that No. 3 ranking?

If the shoe fits, there usually is no room for debate. But in this case, it appears the Cowboys still have room to grow.

A Bigger Shoe

Although its 7-0 record puts Oklahoma State among the seven remaining undefeated teams in the Top 25, there is just something about the Cowboys that does not scream "We are the third best team in the nation."

Yes, the Pokes' offense is one of the best in the country, ranking second in both passing and scoring and third in total offense. But their defense leaves much to be had.

No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Alabama and No. 4 Stanford rank third, first and 18th in total defense respectively and No. 3 Oklahoma State ranks 103rd.

One of these teams is not like the other.

Getting What You Deserve

All things considered, Oklahoma State is a good football team. If its defense cannot stop anyone, expect its offense to score more. The experienced Brandon Weeden can sling it to a flurry of talented receivers, including Justin Blackmon.

There may not be a more potent passing attack in the country.

The Cowboys began the season ranked 9th and have done everything in their power to improve, which means winning games and buying their time while other ahead of the lose.

In the grand scheme, there is no question that they deserve the No. 3 ranking, After all, it was the media that gave them that opportunity.

But when held against the surrounding teams, there appears to be a more tangible feeling of legitimacy.

By the end of the year, though, Oklahoma State could redefine what it means to have an offense that makes the best defense.
