Boise State Gets Snubbed for Subpar BCS Conference Teams?

drake kauNov 29, 2008

In a rather blaring and disgusting showing of the almighty capitalist market that we are a part of, the BCS will probably pick a mediocre (at best) Ohio State team over an undefeated Boise State team that is absolutely deserving of the "at-large" BCS bid.

We all know that the writing is on the wall for this to happen. However, what no one is talking about is that there are several other non-BCS schools that are getting the snub for rather average mid-level teams from the BCS conferences.

Unfair? Of course.

Games should be decided on the field.

For instance, Cincinnati is the Big East representative. If BSU and Cincy played on a neutral field, whom do you think would be favored? I would guess BSU by six. At Boise, the Broncos would be favored by 10. If the game were played in Ohio, BSU probably favored by one point.

In fact, would anyone be truly surprised if a subpar Hawaii team beats Cincy next week. The BCS officials better start putting together the excuses, because Cincy may just lose their next game in paradise.

Now, take a closer look at the ACC. Would any team from the ACC be favored in Boise? Not a single one. And, let me ask you this: Would any team from the ACC or the Big East be favored at Boise, TCU or Utah. Probably not.

Perhaps a couple of pick 'em games at best. With the exception of USC, would any team from the Pac 10 be favored at those same schools? Again, the answer is a resounding "no."

I'm not saying that on average, the non-BCS conferences are at par with the BCS conference schools. But I am saying that just because you belong to a BCS conference, it doesn't make you a better team. Better coaching, skilled players, and team work, coupled with lucky breaks and fewer mistakes during a game makes for good teams.

Let the teams decide it on the field. It is time for a playoff system that doesn't exclude teams because they don't belong to a particular conference.

Let me say this to the various opponents of a playoff system that would be fair to all.  "What are you afraid off?"

Oh, sorry, I know the answer to that one. You're afraid of playing BSU, Utah, or TCU and getting stomped.

Good luck keeping the BCS system together with Obama in office.
