WWE: Why John Cena Will Lose WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

When John Cena defeated Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship at Night of Champions a couple weeks ago and raised the prestigious title over his head for the 10th time, there was a great divide among the WWE Universe.

While his fans were obviously happy, an increasing percentage of Cena haters must have felt like it was the movie Groundhog's Day. We've all seen it time and time again.

Cena was dominated for a great deal of the match and no matter what Del Rio pulled out of his bag of tricks, he couldn't put Cena away.

Even a Ricardo Rodriguez run-in wasn't enough to stop Cena's inevitable "hulking up" moment. All of Del Rio's hard work was rendered moot in the blink of an eye as Cena slapped on his sloppy-looking STF en route to victory.

While it's almost ludicrous to pick against Cena at this point, everything is pointing to a short title run and a loss at Hell in a Cell.

When Triple H announced a triple threat Hell in a Cell match between Cena, Del Rio and CM Punk for Sunday's card, I initially thought Cena would dominate as usual.

After further consideration, though, I think it makes more sense to put the belt on Punk or Del Rio. One of the biggest reasons for this, in my mind, is Cena's already-announced involvement in a classic Survivor Series match at Survivor Series in November.

Because of that, I can't see Cena holding the title and neglecting to defend it on a "Big Four" pay-per-view.

It is certainly possible that a stipulation could be added to the match where whomever the sole survivor is wins the title, but the match appears to be for the sole purpose of furthering The Rock and Cena's feud. Since neither Del Rio nor Punk are particularly wrapped up in a feud, the belt belongs with one of them.

This theory also works because in a triple threat match: Cena can lose the title without being pinned or looking weak in the process. This is ideal for the WWE brass as they seem unwilling to allow Cena to lose clean in one-on-one matches.

Any number of scenarios can possibly play out, but I envision Kevin Nash, The Miz and R-Truth somehow getting involved in the bout.

Hell in a Cell is supposed to be a match that prevents outside interference, but people always seem to find a way into the cell.

With Punk in control and seemingly on the way to victory, Nash, Miz, Truth and John Laurinaitis will come to ringside. With keys in hand, Laurinaitis will unlock the cage and Nash, Miz and Truth will go to work on the exhausted Punk and Cena. They will then drape Del Rio over Punk and allow him to regain the title.

This will mark the formation of a dominant heel group that will be very similar to The Corporation of the Attitude Era.

I think this will eventually lead to a Punk vs. Del Rio match at Survivor Series and a five-on-five match between Triple H's team and Laurinaitis' team for control of WWE.

In the end, Cena simply doesn't need to have the title around his waist, but it can do wonders for an up-and-coming star like Del Rio.

Whether it devalues the belt or not, I feel like Cena's win at Night of Champions was nothing more than a means of advancing the storyline.
