Mayweather vs. Ortiz: It's Not Money's Fault He Punched a Sucker

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather is taking some heat for his knockout of Victor "Vicious" Ortiz. And he is taking it unfairly. Mayweather did nothing wrong.

Mayweather was cruising in his fight with Ortiz. There was little Ortiz could do to keep from getting hit by Mayweather, and there was even less he could do about hitting Mayweather.

The fight went this way for the first three rounds. Then a little insanity swept the ring for the fourth round. Ortiz actually managed to catch Mayweather with a couple of shots. He had him backpedaling into the ropes.

Then he decided to stop using his head for thinking and start using it for hitting.

Ortiz blatantly launched himself head first into his Mayweather. It was an obvious headbutt and the referee, Joe Cortez, had no choice but to strip Ortiz of a point.

Cortez separated the boxers but never sent them to a neutral corner. Instead the fight just kind of hung in some weird limbo. During this time, Ortiz realized his blatant headbutt and gave Mayweather a hug.

Cortez still had his hands on the fighter at this point. The fighters separated, touched gloves and then Ortiz went for another hug.

Mayweather had clearly adopted his fighting stance at this point. The fighters were free to resume boxing. Only one of them did though, and that was Mayweather.

As soon as Ortiz started backing away from his hug he was bombarded by a left-right combo that sent him sprawling on the canvas.

The crowd began jeering. I don't blame them. They paid good money for this highly anticipated bout and they didn't want to see it end by someone being knocked out when they weren't ready.

Let's make one thing clear, though. Mayweather does not deserve these jeers. Those belong to the Cortez and then ultimately Ortiz.

Ortiz can't expect a fighter to take a time-out because he wants to hug away his guilty conscience.

It would be foolish for Mayweather to leave himself vulnerable to any surprise attack by letting his guard down for hug. Throwing those punches was the only smart move for Mayweather.
