Wozniacki vs Williams: The Match to Decide Who Is the Best Player on the Tour

Carlos TorresJun 3, 2018

The US Open women's semifinal match that everyone has been expecting is finally here.

The WTA No. 1 ranked player, Caroline Wozniacki, will face the consensus best woman player on tour, Serena Williams, in one of the US Open semifinal matches.

By the way, there is another semifinal in the women's draw on Super Saturday. It will be between No. 9 seed, Australia's Samantha Stosur and Germany's Angelique Kerber, who is unseeded.

That other semifinal match is somewhat overshadowed by the clash between the W's.

This is because the match between Wozniacki and Williams is viewed by most as a forward ending to the year's final Grand Slam Event.

It can be said that, unofficially, this is the battle to determine who really is the best player on the women’s tour.

Behind this reasoning stands the argument that if Serena would not have missed playing time, she would still be No. 1 in the world.

Caroline has been ranked No.1 for the past 47 weeks. But Serena is the former No. 1, who due to injuries and a medical condition, has seen limited action, and thus lost the No.1 ranking.

For this match, Williams has the experience factor on her side. She is a three-time US Open champion—1999, 2002 and 2008—and the winner of 13 Grand Slam tournaments.

Wozniacki, meanwhile, seems to have the most pressure at this meeting. There is the general notion that she is not a true and worthy No.1 until she wins a Grand Slam tournament.

She wants to win her first Grand Slam and looks physically and mentally ready for it. She certainly has the best chance ever.

While we haven't seen much of Serena this year, it has been the best of Wozniacki's career. Last year she won six titles for the whole year.

This year, she has already won six titles and is playing her best tennis.

Serena gets to the semifinals playing red hot tennis. During the summer she won the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford and the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Here at the US Open, she is the only one of the four semifinalists who has yet to drop a set in the whole tournament.

With her play, Serena looks ready to reclaim the throne that belonged, for the past two years, to the Belgian Kim Clijsters.

Serena has defeated Wozniacki the only two times they have played before, both in 2009. But that was back when The Great Dane was not even in the Top 20 of the WTA rankings.

This time, the match has all the makings to become an instant classic.

We will see a contrast between the punishing and intimidating style of Serena, and the tactical and explosive style of Wozniacki.

Both players will be going all out for the win, knowing that it’s not only the spot at the finals that is at stake.

The title is the ultimate goal for Wozniacki and Williams, but a win here will give either one a slight advantage in the perception of who is the true No. 1.

The winner of this match will have a boost in confidence—if such a thing is possible with them—and be considered the heavy favorite to win the final match on Sunday.

With all due respect to Samantha Stosur and Angelique Kerber’s semifinal, the W’s semifinal is the one to watch.
