US Open Tennis 2011: Caroline Wozniacki's Dominant Start Encouraging

Eric BallJun 5, 2018

Is this the one?

Will this finally be the first Grand Slam title for Caroline Wozniacki?

It’s a question that’s gaining steam after watching the No. 1 player in the world through her first three matches.

On Saturday Wozniacki barely broke a sweat as she cruised past Vania King 6-2, 6-4.

Wozniacki lost a grand total of six games in her first two matches at Flushing Meadows. For a competitor who hasn’t always been the most self-assured player on tour, it’s the kind of start she had to have. The further she goes into this tournament playing at this level the more her confidence will grow.

This is great news considering she entered the final Grand Slam of the season suffering opening-round losses in back-to-back tournaments. Most critics had written her off before the event had even begun, despite her No. 1 ranking.

Funny how quickly things can change in a week.

She still has four matches to win, but Wozniacki is playing some incredibly impressive tennis. Yet Wozniacki admitted she can’t be looking too far ahead of herself.

"I feel like I'm on a roll and I'm playing well," she said. "I believe I can beat anyone on a good day but I have to play on a high level for seven matches, and that's not easy.

You name it and it’s working for her right now—her serve, backhand and foot speed. The lack of a weak spot in her game is a great asset to have as the tournament rolls on.

As so many of the top women’s seeds begin to drop like flies, her chances of winning are looking better by the day. Right now Wozniacki and Serena Williams have been hands-down the best two players in the field.

If she continues to play at this level, her first major tournament trophy awaits.
