UFC 134 Results: Was This One of the Greatest Fight Cards in UFC History?
Simply put. Yes.
Had this card taken place anywhere but Brazil, the answer may be different. But given the magnitude of this event, the turnout at the arena, the number of people watching at home, and the fact that the UFC was coming home, yes, it is one of the greatest events in UFC history.
UFC 134 delivered on all levels, as all but one of the Brazilian fighters were victorious, and all were impressive.
For the hometown fans in Brazil, the main card could have started off better. Luiz Cane started off the main card, and was the only Brazilian on the card to lose to someone who wasn't Brazilian.
After that though, boy did the rest of the main card deliver for their home.
Antonio "Minotauro" Nogueira proved that he is still a relevant heavyweight, even after 18 months off, when he swiftly knocked out Brendan Schaub at the 3:09 mark of the first round.
Nogueira is a legend in Brazil, and he could not have made a more triumphant return.
After Nogueira, lightweight prospect Edson Barboza was able to edge out a split decision from Ross Pearson, and earn the right to call himself a lightweight contender.
The co-main event of the evening featured Mauricio "Shogun" Rua taking on Forrest Griffin in a rematch of their UFC 73 match.
The Shogun of old showed up on Saturday night, and he was able to knock out Griffin in just under two minutes, and earn his 17th win via (T)KO.
In the main event of the evening, nobody was giving Yushin Okami much of a chance.
Everywhere you looked, people had Silva by second-round KO. People must be psychic.
Silva knocked out Okami and delivered for his fans, by proving himself as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of all time.
There were no real wars on this card, as some expected, no incredible submissions, and no monstrous upsets.
What there were, was proud Brazilians fighting at home, who wanted to put on the performance of their lives, and to be remembered as the men who brought the UFC home.
Edson Barboza proved that he is a force to be reckoned with. Minotauro Nogueira proved why he is a legend of the sport, and that he still has a lot of fight left.
Mauricio Rua showed that he still has the heart, talent and drive of a champion. Anderson Silva showed why he is the greatest of all time.
Brazil could not have asked for more.
Congratulations, gentlemen. You are a part of UFC history, as you were involved in one of the greatest cards in UFC history.
