US Open 2011: Power Ranking Roger Federer's 16 Career Slams

Carlos TorresMay 31, 2018

Even at age 30 RogerĀ Federer still manages toĀ establish himself asĀ oneĀ ofĀ theĀ topĀ world tennis players.Ā Behind him there is a history ofĀ struggle and perseverance, from his childhood to eventually moving up in the rankings to become the bestĀ tennis player in theĀ world.

FedererĀ was born onĀ August 8, 1981Ā inĀ Basil, Switzerland.Ā He picked up hisĀ first racketĀ at age three, but duringĀ his childhood, he hesitated between playing hockeyĀ and football. In fact, he was an outstandingĀ junior playerĀ in theĀ National HockeyĀ team.

At age eightĀ he beganĀ playing tennisĀ with the passion for the sportĀ sparkedĀ byĀ hisĀ idols, Boris BeckerĀ and Stefan Edberg.Ā Then, he continuedĀ trainingĀ and entered theĀ SwissĀ Tennis Federation, achievingĀ great resultsĀ in hisĀ juniorĀ stageĀ in theirĀ country.

At fourteen years old that he made the decision about the sport where he would achieve everything. InĀ 1998 he beganĀ his professional career,Ā and even then, he showed the promise of greatness at the tender age of 17.

13 years and 67 career titles later, Roger Federer is the king of tennis Grand Slam tournaments. He has won 16 of them, and by most accounts, while he is still active, he will have a fair shot to continue adding to his record.

Whether that record will stand when Rafael Nadal—who has won 10—finishes his career is subject to debate. Many think Rafa will eclipse that mark, but for now it is King Roger in the Grand Slams court.

Ranking all 16 of his major victories is no easy feat. You can either take the pure stats approach, or go by how significant or entertaining each was. A lot of people remember his Slams because of how the Finals played out.

No matter how you do it, you can't be wrong. Let's take a look at how I rank them based on a combination of those approaches.

16. Wimbledon 2003

1 of 16

Career Grand Slam No. 1

Road to the Championship:

128: def. Hyung-Taik Lee 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (2)

64: def. Stefan Koubek 7-5, 6-1, 6-1

32: def. Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1

16: def. Feliciano López 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4

QF: def. #8 Sjeng Schalken 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

SF: def. #5 Andy Roddick 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-3

FIN: def. Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (3)

After being eliminated in the first round a year before, Federer reached the finals for the first time in a major tournament here.

Federer played with great confidence and lost only one set—to Mardy Fish. He won the Wimbledon title after defeating unseeded Australian Mark Philippoussis in straight sets.

Federer did not concede a break point in the the entire finals match, which lasted one hour and 56 minutes.

15. US Open 2004

2 of 16

Career Grand Slam No. 4

Road to the Championship:

128: def. Albert Costa 7-5, 6-2, 6-4

64: def. Q Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1

32: def. #31 Fabrice Santoro 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7)

16: def. #16 Andrei Pavel WD

QF: def. #6 Andre Agassi 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3

SF: def. #5 Tim Henman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

FIN: def. #4 Lleyton Hewitt 6-0, 7-6 (3), 6-0

This was Federer's first US Open title. It was his third in the year and fourth Grand Slam overall.

At that time he became just the 10th male player to win three Grand Slams in one year, something that had not happened since Mats Wilander did it in 1988.

His quarterfinal match with Andre Agassi was the highlight match of the tournament for Federer. A primetime five-setter where Agassi, on the downslope of his career, proved he could still play with the best.

The finals, the last exhibition of Roger Federer at Flushing Meadows, left Lleyton Hewitt in shock. Federer's magic managed to transform the final into a monologue of just two hours with a strong result: 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0.

Hewitt was a first hand witness of how Federer capped a brilliant season where he became the undisputed number one with his first US Open title.

14. Wimbledon 2005

3 of 16

Career Grand Slam No. 5

Road to the Championship:

128: def. Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

64: def. Ivo MinÔř 6-4, 6-4, 6-1Ā

32: def. #25 Nicolas Kiefer 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5

16: def. #23Ā  Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (6)

QF: def. #21 Fernando Gonzalez 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (2)

SF: def. #3 Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4)

FIN: def. #2 Andy Roddick 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-4

His third consecutive Wimbledon title, Federer was still thrilling in Center Court at Wimbledon. Up to that time, he had never lost a match there.

Always crying at the end, three times a winner now and counting, something available only to Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras in the professional era. Only dropped one set during the tournament.

He defeated the players seeded No. 3 and No. 2 in his last two matches to win the title.Ā  Andy Roddick had to settle as the bridesmaid for the second year in a row.

In an hour and 41 minutes (with a break for rain for 24 minutes) he had the first two sets in the bag. Federer was making difficult look simple, complicated into magic, what cost others a hard sweat and tears.

At the time a total of 30 career titles, five of them Grand Slams.

This was Federer's first Grand Slam hard court title and second overall. He was ranked second behind Andy Roddick.

Along the way he defeated hometown favorite Lleyton Hewitt, and easily defeated then #3 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

In the finals he beat unseeded Marat Safin, who had eliminated top seeded Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals and defending champ Andre Agassi in the semifinals.

Safin—2000 US Open Champion and former No. 1—was unseeded because he missed most of the previous year due to a series of injuries.

Federer beat Safin in straight sets after two hours and 15 minutes of play. He came out of this tournament not only as the Champion but also ranked No. 1 in the world.

12. US Open 2008

SF: def. #3 Novak Djokovic 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2

FIN: def. #6 Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2

Roger Federer, then second seed, won his fifth consecutive title at the US Open, and 13th Grand Slam by beating Andy Murray at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Federer was the first player in 84 years to win five consecutive US Opens in New York.

Federer was pushed to the limit by Igor Andreev in the fourth round, and had to fight all-out against qualifier Giles Müller in the quarters.

Then he played the rematch of the Wimbledon finals against Djokovic, who took one set from him this time, but it was not as hard fought as the Wimbledon final.

Against Murray, Federer played with a high percentage of first serves. He lived comfortably with his serve and began to put pressure to Murray from the first ball, who lost his serve in the sixth game to fall behind 4-2.

After consolidating the break, Federer once again enjoy two break-points to end the first set.
With 6-5 in the second set, Federer pressured Murray and began to write the epilogue to the final.

He won the game and ended the little resistance Murray had left, and easily took the third set in which his opponent looked like a minor player.

11. Australian Open 2006

6 of 16

Career Grand Slam No. 7

Road to the Championship:

128: def. WC Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-3, 6-2

32: def. #30 Max Mirnyi 6-3, 6-4, 6-3

SF: def. #21 Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2

FIN: def. Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2

After being ousted in the semifinals by eventual champion Marat Safin the previous year, Federer bounced back to win his second Australian Open.

He had to work for this title, playing extra sets in his last four matches. It was highlighted by his five-setter against Tommy Haas in the fourth round and his great match against Davydenko in the quarterfinals.

But there was no denying him at the end. In the final match, the miracles of Baghdatis lasted the first set. Federer broke Baghdatis' serve in the twelfth game of the second set, and suddenly ended the hopes of Baghdatis, who then conceded 11 straight games

To top it off, Baghdatis suffered a cramp in the fourth set. Federer's tennis overwhelmed him in the final two sets, finishing with a total of 50 winners hit.

Federer won in two hours and 46 minutes, adding the seventh Slam of his career to his record.

10. Wimbledon 2004

7 of 16

Career Grand Slam No. 3

Road to the Championship:

128: def. WC Alex Bogdanovic 6-3, 6-3, 6-0

64: def. Q Alejandro Falla 6-1, 6-2, 6-0

32: def. Thomas Johansson 6-3, 6-4, 6-3

16: def. Ivo Karlović 6-3, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5)

QF: def. #7 Lleyton Hewitt 6-1, 6-7 (1), 6-0, 6-4

SF: def. #10 SƩbastien Grosjean 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (6)

FIN: def. #2 Andy Roddick 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-4

Federer's second consecutive Wimbledon title. With this tournament he started his record streak of reaching 23 consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals.

In the finals match Roddick started the match with great determination and aggressiveness, and made perfect use of his powerful first serve, which led him to take the first set.

Unsurprisingly, and despite not finding his best game (especially in service), Federer started to return better, get to the net, and score points with his excellent backhand, which evened the score.

By the third set, Roddick was ahead by four to two. But the rain brought a new suspension, and after resuming play, Federer was again the player that everyone admired and took the set.

His reaction on the one hand and, on the other, the fact that Roddick no longer found the energy to maintain his aggressive strategy, led to Federer's successful defense of his title.

SF: def. #3 Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 7-6 (0), 4-6, 6-3

FIN: def. #7 Andre Agassi 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1

His second consecutive title in the US Open. He won it in the final against none other than local hero Andre Agassi, which was Agassi's last major final.

Andre Agassi showed up against the best player on the planet, hit the track convinced of his ability to impose the scorching pace with which he always disarmed his opponents.

But again, Federer saved his best tennis for the culminating moment in a final that lived up to the height of its protagonists.

Agassi leveled the match in the second set and was 4-2 up in the third, until Federer threw all his artillery against the weary figure of his veteran opponent for the win.Ā

FIN: def. #9 Andy Roddick 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1

The 'Swiss Express' continued steamrolling through his opponents in the US Open. He lost only one set prior to the final.Ā

Another final played against Andy Roddick, another loss for Roddick. Federer beat him in four sets. He destroyed Roddick in a 29-minute first set (6-2) and a 28-minute fourth (6-1).

This performance further fueled the arguments of those who proclaimed him as the best player of all time, even though he was still far from the 14 Grand Slam trophies accumulated Pete Sampras.

After weathering the reaction of Andy Roddick in the second set, Roger Federer regained his control and won his third consecutive title at the US Open. It was his ninth Grand Slam trophy and title number 41 in his quest to get closer to the greatest legends of world tennis.

7. Wimbledon 2006

FIN: def. #2 Rafael Nadal 6-0, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-3

This tournament marked the first time he would play against Rafael Nadal in a Wimbledon final.

Roger Federer added his fourth consecutive Wimbledon after beating Rafael Nadal in a nearly three-hour final.

Federer had basically cruised on his way to the finals, not dropping a single set. In the finals, Nadal started playing a little hesitant, but despite his resilient and die-hard attitude, he had to bow to the quality of the No. 1 in the world.

Federer then joined the select club of Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg, as the only ones who have added four or more titles in the 'Cathedral' from the beginning of the Open Era.

6. Australian Open 2010

Career Grand Slam No. 16

Road to the Championship:

128: def. Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-0

64: def. Victor Hănescu 6-2, 6-3, 6-2

32: def. #31 Albert MontaƱes 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

16: def. #22 LleytonĀ  Hewitt 6-2, 6-3, 6-4

QF: def. #6 Nikolay Davydenko 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5

SF: def. #10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-3, 6-2

FIN: def. #5 Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (11)

Another vintage Federer tournament. After struggling early with Igor Andreev—who always plays him well—he cruised to the quaterfinals.

He dropped the initial set against Davydenko, before smoking Tsonga in the semis, setting up his second Slam final against Andy Murray, who had eliminated Rafael Nadal in the quaterfinals.

In the finals, Federer took the lead in the game quickly, breaking Murray's serve in the third game. Although after that break he had more chances, that initial break was enough to manage and capture the first set.

In the second set Federer broke and quickly went to 3-1. In the next game Federer gave no option to Murray on serve, while the Scot had trouble winning his serve games, having to save break-point after break-point.

Although a second break of Murray's serve never came, it was a matter of time before Federer took the second set.

While Murray was two sets down, he still tried the heroics and gave us a great last set. He was up a break 5-2. It seemed far ahead, but it was just a break apart and that's what Federer must have thought, who won three straight games to put the match 5-5.

The match ended in a very exciting tie-breaker. The highlight of that tie-break was when, with Murray up set-point 7-6, they had a super 23-shot rally that Federer won to tie it up at 7-7.

They exchanged leads afterwards, and after two match points saved by Murray, the third time proved to be the charm for Federer, who closed it 13-11.

It was Federer's first as a father figure and at that moment it seemed he could still win another one. That to this day has not happened. It has been, up to now, Federer's 16th and last Grand Slam victory.

5. Wimbledon 2007

SF: def. #12 Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3, 6-4

FIN: def. #2 Rafael Nadal 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2

Roger Federer continued his quest to become one of the best players of all time. Just like the previous year, Rafael Nadal was his opponent in the final.

Once again, Roger had played an excellent tournament before the finals, dropping only one set. With a point of absolute power, Federer gave his all, and closed the hard fight that kept him on the court against Nadal for almost four hours.

It was the first time a Grand Slam between Federer and Nadal was decided on a fifth set.
Federer had never faced this challenge so far in a finals match at Wimbledon.

It didn't faze him too much, because after overcoming four break-points against, he then broke Nadal's serve with amazing authority and shot up to 5-2, which was the deciding factor in winning his fifth consecutive title at 'The Cathedral '.

And after overcoming the fierce battle that Rafael Nadal presented him in the Wimbledon final, he equaled the mark of five straight titles held by Bjorn Borg (1976-1980).

Now on the horizon he was presented with a double challenge: to surpass Sampras' 14 majors and seven Wimbledon singles titles.

4. US Open 2007

13 of 16

Career Grand Slam No. 12

Road to the Championship:

128: def. Q. Scoville Jenkins 6-2, 6-2, 6-4

64: def. Q. Paul Capdeville 6-1, 6-4, 6-4

32: def. WC Jan Isner 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

QF: def. #5 Andy Roddick 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2

SF: def. #4 Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-1, 7-5

FIN: def. #3 Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4

Federer won his fourth consecutive U.S. Open, which was the twelfth Grand Slam of his career, after beating Novak Djokovic in the final over the course of two hours and twenty minutes.

As a bonus he earned the sweet amount of $2,400,000 after winning the USTA Open series.

Nicknamed 'Darth Vader' for the wearing black during the tournament, this was one where Federer had to work hard for the title even though he only dropped two sets—early in the third and fourth rounds.

The players he faced from the third round on made him earn every match, especially the stretch from the quaterfinals forward, where he faced the No. 5, 4 and 3 seeds to win the tournament.

In the finals, it was a superbly played match. Both Federer and Djokovic began very confident, winning service games without breaking a sweat. Both were hitting the ball very flat and powerful—big serves, big-returns—so much that Federer had to change his racket after the break in the seventh game.

In the eleventh game, Djokovic tried the impossible—to break Federer's serve. But you will not beat the No. 1 player in the world when you waste five break-points against him.

The next set was a mere copy of the first, but the outcome was replicated by Federer, winning it in the tie-breaker. The third set was a script similar to previous ones.

Djokovic had chances to break early but wasted them. In the tenth game, Djokovic serving, saved one match point, but Federer closed it out right after for the win.

FIN: def. #10 Fernando GonzƔlez 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4

Roger Federer defeated Chile's Fernando Gonzalez to win the Australia Open for the third time, and his 10th Grand Slam title.

It was an amazing display of dominance and brilliance on court by Roger Federer throughout the tournament. In the final, Federer won with reliability and accuracy over Fernando GonzƔlez in two hours 20 minutes.

After a hard-fought first set (7-6), the Federer overpowered GonzƔlez and ended the last two sets in 6-4.

Federer took the tournament without dropping a set, something that hadn't happened in a Grand Slam since Bjorn Borg achieved it at Roland Garros in 1980. Borg had done it before at Wimbledon in 1976 and in 1978 also in Paris.

Roger Federer, then the world's No. 2, had to suffer through five grueling sets before punishing Andy Roddick to be crowned for the sixth time Wimbledon champion and make history by becoming the first player to win 15 Grand Slam titles.

It was a hard fought tournament for Federer, who from the third round on had to earn every single win. Also, that Monday he moved above Rafael Nadal for the world's No. 1 ranking.

In a thrilling encounter on Centre Court, Federer, who beat the mark he shared with Pete Sampras at 14 majors, needed no less than 4 hours and 16 minutes against the American sixth seed to seal the result, in what was his seventh consecutive final at the All England Club.

He also broke the record of most consecutive major finals when he added his 20th. That was enough to overtake the Czech-American Ivan Lendl, in a final that Sampras watched from the seats of "The Cathedral."

Roddick was not the easy three-sets walkover that many anticipated. Clearly, rewriting the history of the sport is not easy and the burden of pressure gripped Federer. Roddick was looking for some payback, and sought to break the script many had in mind, and he almost did..

History was not on Roddick's side though. Stats showed Federer dominated their head-to-head series—18 Federer wins by Roddick's two.

But Roddick took it to Federer. Even with Roger serving masterfully, he tallied a total of 50 aces compared to 27, Roddick. In the unforced errors they went pretty even, 38 by Federer and 33 by Roddick.

The fifth set was crazy, absolutely giddy. It took 95 minutes to put the final to a final point, which already has the highest number of games (30) in the disputed final set in this tournament.

Roddick played maybe the best match of his life, and unfortunately he lost.

Federer suffered the unspeakable but the story was called. He, after untold suffering, made it on time for this appointment with history.

FIN: def. #23 Robin Soderling 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4

Roger Federer finally won the French Open that cost him so much hardship and with it he equaled the record of 14 Grand Slam crowns that was held by Pete Sampras.

Many still argue it was because Rafael Nadal was not in the finals. Well, it was not Federer' fault Rafa didn't make it, blame Robin Soderling, who played the best match of his life, eliminating Rafa.

Federer had reached the French Open final in the three previous editions, but always hit a wall named Rafael Nadal. However, this year, the Spaniard could not even peek in the final, after the four-time defending champ suddenly succumbed to Soderling in the second round.

Roger made it to the final, but it was no walk in the park. Acasuso took it to him in the second round, and Mathieu pushed him to four in the third round.

He also had to overcome being down two sets to none to Tommy Haas in the fourth round, and two sets to one against Del Potro in the semis.

Soderling appeared nervous at being displayed in his first final of a Slam and Federer gave him no chance to rally by hitting deep balls and sudden drop shots.

Soderling was able to react and found his game, forcing the second set to a tiebreaker. But the brilliance of Federer was remarkable in that tiebreak, including four aces in all service points, and the Swede could only grimaced in frustration.

Federer made his way to victory with a break of serve early in the third set and only had to defend his serve until the end.

Even though he did not beat Rafa in the finals here, this is definitely the biggest win of Federer's career. He could finally stop listening to the voices claiming he could not win at Roland Garros. He had completed the career Grand Slam and no one can take that away from him.
