UFC News: Demian Maia Responds to Chael Sonnen's Anti-Brazil Remarks

John HeinisJul 20, 2011

Demian Maia is one of the few well-known Brazilian MMA fighters that has not had much to say regarding Chael Sonnen’s recent anti-Brazil remarks.

Maia has met Sonnen in the Octagon before, and while it was a definitive win for Maia, the two have shown a mutual respect for one another since then.

Sonnen has credited Maia for being one of the top guys in the middleweight division on multiple occasions, while Maia stated that “I believe in Chael Sonnen” prior to Sonnen’s UFC 117 title bout with Anderson Silva.

However, a new YouTube video featuring Maia seems to indicate that the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist feels that Uncle Chael has taken the trash talk a bit far this time around.

The Brazilian TV show “UFC Sem Limites,” which means “UFC Limitless” in English, is promoting a new segment called “Send a message to Sonnen."

Maia stepped up to the plate for the first edition of the segment.

After a brief opening scene featuring a picture of Sonnen altered with some cartoon features, Maia gives a brief statement that reads:

“I am Demian Maia and my message to Sonnen is this:”

“He came to Brazil and was surprised that we had computers here, we had Internet. So I think when he does come to Brazil he doesn’t have to worry about finding if we have or not technology here,[sic]”

“I think he can come here and will certainly have a lot of people who can teach him some defense of triangle! [sic]”

Wow, so in the trash talk department, it appears that the score is Maia 1, Sonnen 0.

Sonnen is almost as well known for his poor submission defense as he is for his outlandish trash talk.

Maia defeated Sonnen with a triangle choke at UFC 95, and in 11 career defeats, eight of those losses have come by way of submission.

Out of the eight submission losses, half of those have come by way of triangle choke.

Maia’s video was uploaded to YouTube on July 18.

Shockingly, Sonnen has yet to respond.

Will Chael make another enemy and come back spitting venom at Maia?

If history repeats itself, we all know the answer to that question.
