Summerslam Picks: Triple H Makes His In-Ring Return, Who Is the WWE Champion?

Kevin GermanyJun 7, 2018

This slideshow will be my dream Summerslam pay-per-view within reason. I say within reason because Rock will not be present. He is filming GI Joe from August to November.

Summerslam has a difficult task of surpassing Money in the Bank, which laid the foundation for the new era. Social media will be the cornerstone of this new era.

CM Punk leaving Chicago with the WWE Championship was an unforgettable moment in the annals of WWE history. Punk's incredible shoot promo turned him into the best antihero in the WWE.

Unfortunately, I don't expect Punk to be back by Summerslam. He should enjoy his well-deserved time off and relax in the Windy City or wherever he may be.

With that, here is Summerslam emanating from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The main event is a match many years in the making.

Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes in a Briefcase vs. Mask Match

1 of 11

This match has been seen countless times on Smackdown. Nevertheless a match between Cody Rhodes and Daniel Bryan will suffice as the opener.

Cody Rhodes challenges Daniel Bryan to Bryan's Money in the Bank briefcase. Bryan accepts if Rhodes puts his mask on the line. In addition, Ted Dibiase is banned from ringside.

(Read the Smackdown spoilers as to why Daniel Bryan won't cash in anytime soon.)

Daniel Bryan stole the show at last year's Summerslam. There is no reason why Rhodes vs. Bryan won't steal the show this year. This is a perfect feud to get both Rhodes and Bryan more exposure on Smackdown.

The match ends with the Ring of Honor legend ripping off Rhodes' mask. Then Bryan kicks Rhodes in the back of the head with the Brainbuster. He makes Rhodes tap out to the LeBell Lock to retain his briefcase.

Winner: Daniel Bryan

Estimated Match Time: 15 minutes

Ezekiel Jackson (C) vs. Mark Henry for the Intercontinental Championship

2 of 11

People might view this as a major step down for the World's Strongest Man. The Intercontinental Championship needs to be restored back to its past glory.

In 1992, the Intercontinental Championship match between Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith was the main event at Summerslam held at Wembley Stadium in London.

Mark Henry vs. Ezekiel Jackson for the Intercontinental Championship will remind WWE fans of a recent trend. This trend of pushing veterans clashes with the 2010 youth movement.

The match itself won't be a technical clinic or a spectacular high-flying match. But it will be between two powerhouses who know their way around the weight room. Mark Henry hits the World's Second Strongest Slam (after the World's Strongest Slam failed to do the job) on Ezekiel Jackson to win the Intercontinental Championship.

Winner (and new champion): Mark Henry

Estimated Match Time: 10 minutes (anything longer than that might put people to sleep)

R-Truth vs. John Morrison in a Falls Count Anywhere Match

3 of 11

On Raw, R-Truth is cutting an entertaining conspiracy promo when John Morrison interrupts him.

Morrison says, "R-Truth, if you love the 'Little Jimmies' so much then why don't we fight among them"? R-Truth agrees since "Little Johnny" was out to get him the whole time.

This feud has been brewing for a long time. Ever since R-Truth turned heel his main target was the Shaman of Sexy, the Guru of Greatness, the Honcho of Hotness, and my personal favorite I made up, Mr. Abs. Maybe John Morrison's nickname is Mr. Too Many Nicknames.

R-Truth vs. John Morrison should be a great match in spite of some potential obstacles. Morrison will be a little rusty since he injured his neck in Late April/Early May. R-Truth is slowly digressing as a comedic heel since his promos are hilarious.

John Morrison somehow does a Starship Pain on top of the WWE statue near the entrance ramp but R-Truth avoids it. R-Truth then hits his finishing move to pin the Prince of Parkour.

Winner: R-Truth

Estimated Match Time: 20 minutes

Kelly Kelly (C) vs. Beth Phoenix for the Divas Championship

4 of 11

For those of you who don't know, Beth Phoenix is the real-life girlfriend of CM Punk. Beth Phoenix is being severely underutilized as of right now. There needs to be a dominant heel in the Divas division with Kharma's absence. Beth Phoenix can be the powerhouse heel she was meant to be.

Beth Phoenix turns on Kelly Kelly after a tag team victory over the Bella Twins. Afterwards Phoenix cuts a CM Punk-esque worked-shoot promo about how the Divas division is becoming a joke.

The Glamazon disparages the WWE for not pushing the Divas who can wrestle and look sexy. She also vows to change the Divas Championship back to the Women's Championship after she destroys Kelly Kelly.

The match itself is a solid encounter, with Kelly Kelly pulling off the shocking upset after reversing the Glam Slam.

Winner (and still champion): Kelly Kelly

Estimated Match Time: 10 minutes

Miz vs. Jack Swagger vs. Alex Riley vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston

5 of 11

This is a championship scramble match to determine the number one contender to the WWE Championship. The winner gets a title shot at Night of Champions. Read the complicated rules here. Instead of the usual five-minute interval there is a three-minute interval.

WWE should consider using this type of match to determine a number one contender. A championship scramble match has not been seen since Unforgiven in 2008. The only concern I have is Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston in the ring against each other for the trillionth time. But the nature of the scramble match should offset this concern.

I will give you one guess as to the winner is. Hint: he is awesome.

Winner: Miz

Estimated Match Time: 15 minutes

Alberto Del Rio vs Triple H

6 of 11

This is a match people want to pay to see. Triple H makes his in-ring debut as the (on-screen) chairman by facing Alberto Del Rio.

On next week's edition of Raw, Alberto Del Rio tries to cash in on Rey Mysterio. But Triple H incapacitates Del Rio with a sledgehammer before he can cash it in.

Del Rio responds by having Ricardo Rodriguez trying to hit Triple H with Del Rio's car. Instead Rodriguez accidentally hits Stephanie McMahon. Alberto Del Rio and Triple H now have an intense, personal feud that is a hot-button topic among the IWC.

Last October Del Rio and Triple H wrestled in a fan's appreciation house show in Connecticut. Triple H won in a squash match.

Triple H's in-ring return will generate buys for Summerslam. Alberto Del Rio and Triple H are great in the ring. But you already know that. Triple H escapes Alberto Del Rio's cross arm-breaker just as Triple H's arm is about to snap. The Game finishes off the Mexican Aristocrat with a pedigree.

Winner: Triple H

Estimated Match Time: 20 minutes

Christian (C) vs. Randy Orton vs. Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Championship

7 of 11

Does this video not give you goosebumps? Who would have thought Christian would be a two time World Heavyweight Champion this time last year?

Here is some important information to consider. The August 9th episode of Smackdown is advertising Christian vs. Randy Orton in a street fight for the World Heavyweight Championship. I see Sheamus being involved regardless of the outcome.

All three of these men detest each other. Ronald McDonald's evil twin vs. the scrawny malnourished Canadian vs. the schizophrenic Viper should be a fantastic match. The Celtic Warrior's brawling style along with Christian's combination of technical and high-flying prowess and Randy Orton's methodical in-ring style compliment each other very nicely.

Orton hits the RKO on Sheamus just as Sheamus misses the brogue kick on Christian. Then Christian manages to spear Orton. Christian tries to pin Orton but Orton kicks out. He tries pin Sheamus but Sheamus kicks out. Finally Christian hits the Killswitch on Sheamus as Orton fails to breakup the three count in time.

Winner (and still champion): Christian

Estimated Match Time: 25 minutes

Rey Mysterio (C) vs John Cena for the WWE Championship

8 of 11

One chief problem I have with pay-per-view main events in they are often seen again on free TV the next night. This makes it pointless to spend $55 on a match you can see on free TV. I was trying to find a main event that no one has seen in a while. This main event will be a great match regardless of the outcome.

John Cena vs. Rey Mysterio

Background

They have not had a match in a long time. The Ultimate Underdog vs. Superman will be nothing short of brilliant. This is a worthy main event for the second biggest pay-per-view of the year. I know a lot of fans will have a problem with the little Chihuahua being WWE Champion going into this match but hear me out.

Rey Mysterio defeats the Miz next week on Raw to become the new WWE Champion. Alberto Del Rio enters the ring and viciously beats down on the new champion. Del Rio attempts to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase on a wounded Mysterio.

Triple H comes out and hits Del Rio with a sledgehammer before the bell is rung. This starts the Del Rio-Triple H feud previously mentioned on my slideshow. John Cena then demands his rematch at Summerslam. Triple H grants the rematch to the giant tomato.

Match Ending

Mysterio escapes the STF. John Cena manages to kick out of the 619/frog splash combination. Mysterio miraculously kicks out of the Attitude Adjustment. Mysterio lands another 619/frog splash combination to another two count. The red Teletubby finishes off the master of the 619 with a second Attitude Adjustment.

Winner (and new champion): John Cena

Estimated Match Time: 30 minutes

John Cena (C) vs. Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship

9 of 11

Alberto Del Rio cashes in his Money in the Bank briefcase even though he just had a grueling match with Triple H. Del Rio is fresher than Cena. John Cena is severely wounded after a "brutal" match with a guy half his size. Alberto Del Rio has the luxury of resting for an hour. Now is the time to strike for the Mexican Aristocrat.

Del Rio publicly challenged John Cena to a match at Summerslam. Furthermore rumors have swirled it will be John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship at Summerslam.

John Cena is on the verge of tapping out to the cross arm-breaker. Cena manages to reach the ropes. Cena is about to adjust the attitude of the arrogant aristocrat until Rock's theme song blares out of the Titantron! But Rock isn't there! Destiny is finally fulfilled after Del Rio kicks a distracted John Cena in the back of the head after a great match.

Winner (and new WWE Champion): Alberto Del Rio

Estimated Match Time: 10 minutes

Conclusion

10 of 11

I was going to give a conclusive analysis to Summerslam but this picture is too funny. Well at least Cena the Teletubby is reaching out to his fan base.

Thanks for reading!

Wait a minute! There's one more match!
